Panellinios BC remained perfect in Group G and handed PGE Turow its third loss in as many games, 83-65 on Tuesday in Athens. Turow will try and earn its first win when it hosts Panellinios next week. Manolis Papamakarios was the hero after coming off the bench to key a 17-0 run that bridged the first and second quarters and put the hosts up 34-15. Turow never fully recovered, partly due to subpar efforts from its biggest stars, Willie Deane and Michael Wright. Papamakarios, who was 4 for 6 from downtown, and Britton Johnsen led the hosts with 16 points apiece. Ian Vougioukas added 14 and Kostas Charalampidis had 12, while Rod Blakney dished 7 assists for the winners. Justin Gray and Konrad Wysocki scored 18 each for Turow in head coach Andrej Urlep’s debut.
Veteran Adam Wojcik, making his first start of the season, opened the scoring for Turow from the free throw line and it wasn’t long before Vougioukas had the home team on the scoreboard. The score remained tight with the teams trading buckets for several minutes before Devin Smith put Panellinios up 11-7. However Georgios Kalaitzis fouled Deane taking a three and after making 3 free throws and a jumper, Turow had taken the lead. Josh Davis out Panellinios back on top, though a Deane triple kept Turow within striking distance. Papamakarios gave Panellinios a 20-15 edge after 10 minutes. Papamakarios drained another triple early in the second quarter as the lead blossomed to double digits. Charalampidis added a basket, Vasilis Xanthopoulos stripped Gray for an easy layup and then Charalampidis sank 2 free throws as Panellinios pulled away. Another Papamakarios three capped a 17-0 Panellinios charge that made it 34-15. Four minutes into the second quarter Wright finally ended the Turow drought, but even with the visitors scoring, they could not stop Panellinios long enough to make any progress. Vougioukas ank a free throw as the lead reached 20 points. Deane set up Gray for a three and Wojcik inside to get within 40-25, but Blakney came on to give Panellinios a 45-27 lead at the half.
Wright opened the second half with free throws and and Gray added a basket as Turow tried to gather steam, but a Johnsen triple showed that Panellinios was in control. Wysocki tried to spark the visitors, but could only get his team within 60-49 on a triple at the end of the quarter. Panellinios scored the first 5 points of the fourth quarter to stabilize its control. Wojcik and Gray continued to battle away, but they were met by Panellinios scorers at every turn. A Johnsen three with two-and-a-half minutes to go made the score 76-59 and proved to be the dagger in Turow’s hopes as the hosts closed out a big win.
