Panathinaikos paints the Greek Derby green

In an outstanding Greek derby, Panathinaikos OPAP Athens defeated arch rivals Olympiacos Piraeus 93-80 at home. Panathinaikos improved to 4-2 in the standings and is now ahead of Olympiacos, which dropped to 3-3. Lukas Lekavicius led the winners with 17 points. Nick Calathes added 14 and 7 assists, Thanasis Antetokounmpo had 12 while Matt Lojeski got 10 for Panathinaikos. Georgios Printezis led Olympiacos with 26 points on 9-of-10 two-point shots. Janis Timma added 17 on 5-of-6 three-point shots while Nikola Milutinov had 11 for the guests.

A three-pointer by Calathes and a deep jumper by DeShaun Thomas gave Panathinaikos an early 8-4 lead. Timma struck twice from downtown and a jump hook by Printezis put Olympiacos in charge, 10-12. A 7-0 run which Keith Langford capped with a triple made the hosts regain a 17-12 lead. Milutinov stepped up for the guests and Axel Toupane had 7 points in a 0-9 run that gave Olympiacos a 21-25 edge early in the second quarter. Lekavicius rescued Panathinaikos but Timma followed consecutive three-pointers with free throws for a 33-37 Olympiacos edge. Printezis joined the three-point shootout and soon added his trademark jump hook and a put-back layup to keep Olympiacos ahead, 41-48, at halftime. A dunk by Stephane Lasme and a power layup by Thomas gave Panathinaikos hope, 47-51, soon after the break. Lojeski followed free throws with a jumper and a reverse slam by Antetokounmpo made Olympiacos stop the game at 54-54. An alleyoop dunk by James Gist completed the hosts' comeback, 56-55. Antetokounmpo took over with a couple of three-point plays and a huge put-back slam that made it a double-digit game, 67-57, which Zach LeDay and Printezis cut to 67-62 after 30 minutes. A close basket by Calathes made it an eight-point game, 72-64, early in the fourth quarter. Milutinov and Printezis tried to ignite Olympiacos's comeback but Lekavicius and Gist kept the hosts way ahead, 81-72, with over 4 minutes left. Olympiacos did not come back and Panathinaikos had plenty of time to celebrate a big home win.

Pivotal performer

Lekavicius had 17 points, leading a deep, productive Panathinaikos bench. The Greens' bench players combined for 48 points. Olympiacos' bench was limited to just 18 points.

Game-changing moment

With Olympiacos leading 50-54, Antetokounmpo had a reverse slam, two three-point plays and a wild put-back dunk in a 12-1 run that put Panathinaikos ahead for good, 62-55. The Greens never looked back after that moment.

Stellar stat

"First of all, I have to say 'thank you' to all the supporters. The atmosphere that we had here in OAKA was amazing tonight. They helped us in the difficult moments and in the good moments. The harmony between the team and the supporters was fantastic. I think it was a very beautiful game, most probably one of the most beautiful games between Olympiacos and Panathinaikos in the last years. I think we saw today good basketball and good tactical things on defense and offense, good reactions from both teams."

"We know basketball is a sport in which a lot of mistakes happen, but we made too many in the first 20 minutes, especially on defensive rebounds and one-on-one situations. In the second half we changed the rhythm of the game, improved our defense and our rebounding and after that, we found the way to have rhythm, to run primary and secondary options. This is why, in the end, step by step, we controlled the game and won."

BLATT, DAVID
Olympiacos Piraeus
"Congratulations to Panathinaikos. Two very different halves - obviously, the first half, where we played very well and outplayed our opponent and the second half, where they played extremely well and outplayed us. We are not going to win many games giving up 20 offensive rebounds - you can write that down and it will prove to be true just about any game you will ever see. Panathinaikos is too good of a team to have that those types of opportunities for second and third possessions on one offensive set. And of course, when you are not defensive rebounding, you are not able to run and play the kind of game that we want to play. That was the story."

"This is definitely a boost for us. Obviously, the rivalry between both teams makes it bigger than a normal game. We got better in the second half and started playing better defense. Our big guys made big plays and Lekavicius really played well. We just played very good defense and that is what we are going to need to win games like this."
GIST, JAMES
Panathinaikos OPAP Athens
"I think that two of the guys that really helped us out and gave us a little kick. One of them was Thanasis Antetokounmpo - he brought nothing but energy in the third quarter, from the beginning, all the way until the end of the game, every minute he was on the floor. He really gave us an extra boost that got the fans into the game. And the other guy was 'Leka' [Lukas Lekavicius] - he came in and gave us a really good spark on offense and defense. They picked it up for us and everybody else followed behind. We showed our potential, what we can do and what we are capable of. Everybody has to bring something. If everything brings something, we will be OK. In games like this, you have to show you want it more. It is not about the Xs and Os, it is not about the strategy - it is a dog fight and who has the biggest fight, who wants every ball, who wins every possession. The name of this game - 'who gets more possessions wins'. We have to keep it up. We cannot go down from here - we have to keep going up."
TIMMA, JANIS
Olympiacos Piraeus
"What changed in the second half was the offensive rebounds. We allowed 20 offensive rebounds in this game, too many. We reacted very badly in this area and gave them second chances which ended with baskets. Olympiacos had five rookies in such a hot game. This is a fact - it is a new group, we have to learn from each other and we need patience."
