Second unit lifts Panathinaikos over Efes
Panathinaikos OPAP Athens grabbed its third win of the EuroLeague season by downing Anadolu Efes Istanbul 86-70 at OAKA in the Greek capital on Thursday. Panathinaikos improved to 3-3 in the standings and Efes dropped to 4-2 as its four-game winning streak came to an end. Tyrese Rice led the winners with 18 points. Ioannis Papapetrou added 14, Nick Calathes and Jimmer Fredette scored 11 each and Georgios Papagiannis netted 10 for Panathinaikos. Calathes dished 10 assists and Papagiannis corraled 7 rebounds for the winners. Shane Larkin paced Efes with 28 points, Chris Singleton posted 13 points and 11 rebounds and Krunoslav Simon scored 11 points for the visitors. Efes led 51-54 midway through the fourth quarter but Rice and Papagiannis fueled a 17-1 run that gave Panathinaikos the lead and the victory.
Singleton and Larkin got Efes going with respective jumpers, but Thomas scored twice around the basket and Calathes added a layup off a steal for a 6-4 Panathinaikos lead. Fredette struck twice from downtown and fed Ben Bentil for a dunk, causing Efes to call timeout at 14-6. Larkin took over with a coast-to-coast layup, which Bryant Dunston followed with a put-back layup, but DeShaun Thomas and Rice made it a double-digit game, 20-10. Simon followed a triple with a couple of layups only to see Calathes and Rice restore a 24-17 Panathinaikos lead after 10 minutes. Wesley Johnson downed a three-pointer early in the second quarter and Papapetrou added a layup for a 29-22 Panathinaikos lead. Vasilije Micic scored in the low post, added a driving layup and found Larkin for a jumper that got Efes within 29-28. Fredette hit a floater off a spin move and Calathes gave the hosts fresh air at 33-29. Johnson kept pushing Panathinaikos and a three-pointer by Fredette ignited the crowd at 38-31. Alec Peters hit a jumper and got help from Simon and Larkin to bring Efes within 42-38 at halftime. Larkin sank a triple soon after the break, but Thomas and Ian Vougioukas each scored down low for a 46-41 Panathinaikos lead. Singleton led a 0-5 Efes run that Papapetrou stopped with a bomb from downtown and a jumper to keep the Greens in front. Larkin answered with 6 quick points to complete Efes's comeback, 51-54. Rice and Georgios Papagiannis combined for 10 unanswered points and Papapetrou added free throws for a 63-54 Panathinaikos margin after 30 minutes. Rice swished a three-pointer early in the fourth quarter and a jumper by Johnson broke the game open at 68-55 after a 17-1 run. Larkin followed a triple with a layup-plus-foul, but Calathes kept the hosts in charge at 71-61. A red-hot Papapetrou followed a driving layup with a three-pointer, but Larkin singlehandedly kept Efes alive, 76-66. A three-pointer by Rice sealed the outcome at 78-68 with 3 minutes remaining.
Georgios Papagiannis always found advantages against Efes's defense, reading the game and making the difference down low. He finished the game with 10 points off the bench, 7 rebounds, a steal and a block for a performance index rating of 18 - in just 16 minutes!
Free throws by Shane Larkin gave Efes its first lead since the opening minutes, 51-54. Tyrese Rice had 7 points and Papagiannis added 6, including a wild alley-oop, in a 17-1 run that gave Panathinaikos full control of the game, 68-56, early in the fourth quarter.
Bench players made the difference in this game. Panathinaikos got a solid performance from its second unit, which combined for 51 points and 21 rebounds. Efes's backup players combined for 15 points and 12 rebounds.

Panathinaikos registered its 10th consecutive home win against Efes. The Greens are now 12-1 at home against Efes since 2001, with an average winning margin of 13.1 points. The sole victory for Efes in Athens came on March 8, 2006 - more than 13 years ago.
Both teams return to EuroLeague action next week. Efes returns to Greece to face Olympiacos Piraeus on Thursday, November 7. A day later, Panathinaikos hosts Valencia Basket.
