Eriksson leads Gran Canaria to second win

Herbalife Gran Canaria bounced back from recent losses in Group D by downing Dolomiti Energia Trento 85-76 at home on Wednesday. Gran Canaria improved to 2-2 in Group D, while Trento dropped to 1-3. Marcus Eriksson led the winners with 23 points and Anzejs Pasecniks added 12 for Gran Canaria, which outrebounded its opponents 37-21 and made 22 of 25 free throws. Dominique Sutton led Trento with 23 points, Chane Behanan added 16 and Yannick Franke 11 for the visitors. Sutton had 14 points in the opening six minutes to give Trento a 19-21 edge after 10 minutes. Pasecniks and Eriksson took over right after that to put Gran Canaria in charge, 42-39, at halftime. Eriksson shined late in the third quarter for a double-digit Gran Canaria lead, 65-55, after 30 minutes. Trento kept trying, but Eriksson and D.J. Seeley made sure Gran Canaria stayed way ahead until the final buzzer.

Sutton got Trento going with a couple of three-pointers and a driving layup to singlehandedly give his team a 4-8 lead. Eriksson followed a fade-away jumper with a layup in transition and soon added a three-pointer to keep Gran Canaria within 11-12. Sutton stayed unstoppable with a driving basket and a second-chance layup and he got help from Diego Flaccadori to boost Trento's lead to 15-21. Dunks by Pasecniks brought Gran Canaria within 19-21 after 10 minutes. Pasecniks kept pushing Gran Canaria early in the second quarter and driving layups by Shaquielle McKissic and Oriol Pauli put the hosts back ahead, 29-26. Franke tried to change things with a driving layup and a three-pointer, while Behanan and Betinho Gomes each added a layup-plus-foul for a 33-37 Trento lead. Erikson took over with 5 unanswered points, Albert Oliver added a jumper and Pasecniks's buzzer-beating tip-in gave Gran Canaria a 42-39 edge at the break.

Buhanan followed a three-point play with a huge dunk after the break, but he didn't find any help. Meanwhile, Ondrej Balvin stayed unstoppable down low and a dunk by Eulis Baez caused Trento to call timeout at 51-44. Buhanan dunked again and a three-point play by Sutton brought the guests within 55-49. Eriksson struck twice from downtown, however, and Pauli also hit a triple to make it a double-digit game, 65-55, after 30 minutes. Franke tried to change things for Trento, Gomes hit a three-pointer and Behanan added a layup to bring the visitors as close as 73-68. Luke Fischer and Eriksson made free throws and a layup by Seeley gave Gran Canaria plenty of fresh air, 79-70, with under four minutes left. Eriksson and Seeley hit consecutive jumpers that sealed the outcome down the stretch.

"We had to work hard to get this win, and it couldn't be any other way in this group. If you see tonight's results, you see teams winning by 1 or 2 points and most teams have two wins except for Tofas, which has three. I think we did a very good job, more than the final score says. For instance, we led 110-67 in PIR and 41-26 in rebounds, which are great numbers. We didn't shoot well from three-point range, but hit 70% inside the arc and had 20 assists - all very good numbers. I believe we couldn't get a bigger win due to the many turnovers we had. If we had fewer turnovers, we would not have allowed them to have more possessions than we did, and this is why we had to work until we got the lead and kept it to win the game, which is the most important thing. It was very important to win this game. I am always worried about the game in front of us and I don't analyze anything around the game, but the game plan we have to use to win it. I don't think much about the consequences of a win or a loss, not until the game is over. We will play two more games on the road now, so it was important to win at home. We have to get ready to win the next game in France, but it is seen that this group is very balanced and very competitive."

"Under pressure, we played rushed on offense… We know that Gran Canaria is a team with size, we know that they attack in the low post and the pick and roll, but 25, 28 minutes we were good on the floor, we shared the ball. And the last five minutes against the press our next step would be play the ball better with more confidence. In our situation, swinging the ball and attacking the second side is our strength, but maybe the team is not ready now. "

"The 7DAYS EuroCup is a competitive competition, all the teams in our group are equals. We are really happy we won this game. Now, we need to enjoy and be happy for this win, because it seems like we have been tense the couple days and this win will help us to continue working. We should be really happy for being in a competitive EuroCcup. We must fight for every game. Things aren’t easy, but we have to compete at 200% if we want to win games."
