Strong first half leads Skyliners to third win

Fraport Skyliners Frankfurt registered its third win in Group D by downing Mornar Bar 98-75 at home on Wednesday. Skyliners joins Unicaja Malaga and UNICS Kazan with a 3-1 record and a share of first place in the group, while Mornar Bar dropped to 1-3. Brady Heslip paced the winners with 18 points, Jonas Wohlfarth-Boetterman added 16, Jason Clark had 13, Quantez Robertson and Trae Bell-Haynes netted 11 each and Richard Freudenberg contributed 10 for Skyliners. Nemanja Vranes led Mornar with 15 points, Uros Lukovic added 14, Antabia Waller 12 and Khadeen Carrington and Vukota Pavic scored 10 apiece for the visitors.

A three-pointer by Vranes gave Mornar its only lead, 2-3. Wohlfarth-Boetterman and Robertson fueled a 7-0 run that put Skyliners ahead for good, 9-3. The hosts found a go-to guy in Heslip, who struck four times from downtown. Robertson and Akeem Vargas joined the three-point shootout to boost Skyliners's lead to 36-19 at the end of the first quarter. Carrington and Waller stepped up for Mornar with back-to-back triples, but Heslip and Freudenberg answered from beyond the arc for a 44-27 advantage. Back-to-back layups by Freudenberg broke the game open at 51-31. Skyliners kept hitting outside shots and a dunk by Wohlfarth-Boetterman made it 59-33 en route to a 63-39 halftimme cushion. Nothing changed in the second half, as Wohlfarth-Boetterman kept dominating down low and three-pointers by Clark and Erik Murphy boosted the hosts' lead to 78-50. Mornar kept trying in the fourth quarter, but only got to trade baskets once the outcome was year.

Pivotal performer

In a game in which three-point shots flew all over the place, Jonas Wohlfarth-Boetterman dominated inside, balancing the hosts' offense. 'Wobo' finished the game with 16 points on 8-of-9 two-point shooting – mostly dunks, plus 6 rebounds and 3 blocks for a PIR of 19.

Game-changing moment

Skyliners played a near-perfect first quarter - 5-of-7 two-point shots, 8-of-10 three-pointers, 7 assists and just 1 turnover to get a 36-19 lead.

Best scoring night

Skyliners failed to reach the 100-point mark for the first time in EuroCup history, but came close. Its previous record was almost 15 years old from when it scored 93 points in a win against Demon Astronauts on December 16, 2003.

Stellar stat

Skyliners had 63 first-half points, tying the second-best mark in 7DAYS EuroCup history. Only one team – Zadar with 66 points against Siauliai on January 12, 2010 – had more points before halftime than the Skyliners did tonight.

Did you notice?

Skyliners made 12 of their opening 14 three-point shots attempts - in just 16 minutes! Heslip hit his first 6 shots from downtown.

Next game:

Skyliners visits UNICS Kazan on Wednesday, October 31 at 18:00 CET. An hour later, Mornar Bar hosts Rytas Vilnius.

Head Coaches

HERBERT, GORDON
Fraport Skyliners Frankfurt
"We came out with a really good first half. We shot the ball well, played with confidence and our defensive intensity was good. I think we had a really good rhythm in the first half. We got the ball moving but didn't get the same rhythm in the second half. We had trouble against their zone to get in a rhythm, but overall, we had a better performance. We still have six more games and a tough schedule. We still have to play against the best teams at home. We have to go one game at a game and try to get better one game at a time."
PAVICEVIC, MIHAILO
Mornar Bar
"First of all congratulations to Frankfurt for a simple victory. The first half was the worst of my coaching career. We were not in the game at all. For that we have to find the reasons. In the second half we tried new things, but could not do anything to change the result. "

Players

HESLIP, BRADY THOMAS
Fraport Skyliners Frankfurt
"I just came out motivated, trying to be aggressive and made some shots early. We had a really good first half and sort of put the game away then. I played point guard before with other teams in the past. I felt comfortable doing it other than one bad turnover I had. I will do whatever the team needs me to do. If Coach needs me to bring up the ball sometimes, I am fine doing that. We were trying to keep going [in the second half], but they had their zone going, denying different stuff. We didn't figure out where we wanted to attack until late in the game. Stuff like that happens, but we can learn from it and move forward to the next game."
WOHLFARTH-BOTTERMANN, JONAS
Fraport Skyliners Frankfurt
"We showed a good reaction today and were able to keep the high pace from the start until the end. We did not play good against Goettingen on Sunday so it is good to see, that we can show such a strong team performance and stayed together."
FREUDENBERG, RICHARD
Fraport Skyliners Frankfurt
"The ProB game last Saturday against Munich gave me confidence. I was able to build on this achievement today. The team moved the ball very well. If we continue this way, we are hard to beat."
