Zalgiris Kaunas collected its second win in Group A of the Citta Di Roma tournament on Sunday night in Roma, Italy following a 93-52 victory over Benetton Fribourg. With this win Zalgiris climbs to 2-0 while the team from Swiss drops to 0-2 before playing their last games in Group A tomorrow. Zalgiris will take on Stella Azzurra while Benetton will take on Montepaschi Siena. With a win tomorrow Zalgiris will secure a spot in the finals, and move just one win shy from securing the spot in the Nike International Junior Tournament in Paris, France during the 2010 Euroleague Final Four. The tournament in Roma is one of four qualifying games to decide the faces to show up in Paris down the road. The first five minutes already whispered on the future to come, as Zalgiris took a 15-0 lead, and from that point on surfed to the easy win, despite a couple of comeback attempts by Fribourg. Augustinas Jankaitis led Zalgiris with 18 points and 10 rebounds, before four other Zalgiris players in double-digits - Egidijus Mockevicius, Dovydas Redikas with 11 and a couple of players with 10 points - Tauras Jogela and Edgaras Ulanovas. Stefan Petkovic with 18 points and Brian Savoy with 15 led the Swiss side.
A series of lay-ups capped with a dunk and a three pointer scored by five different players bestowed Zalgiris with its initial 15-0 gap. Petkovic with a couple of good dishes helped his team-mates find the net from distance and make a small come back, enough for a 21-16 score early in the second quarter, but the active Mockevicius led an 11-2 run by Zalgiris to hold a 35-22 difference at the break. Savoy stepped up after the break and once again the distance between the teams was no more than 7, 38-31, but that was enough for the Greens who answered with a 21-2 sweep with Redikas and Ulanovas taking a key role in it. From that point on Fribourg didn't find the answers for the Lithuanian machine, and lost the closing quarter by 33-8.
