Khimki downs Rytas on opening night

Khimki Moscow Region protected its home court with a close-fought 76-71 victory over Lietuvos Rytas Vilnius in the first game of Group B on Wednesday. The outstanding individual performance came from Rytas' Drew Gordon, who registered a double-double of 21 points and 14 rebounds. The visitors also had 17 points from Arturas Gudaitis, 13 from Corey Fisher and 10 from David Logan. But that wasn’t enough to overcome 2015 EuroCup champions Khimki, which was led by 15 points from Earl Rowland and 13 from Jacob Pullen. Marko Todorovic and Sergey Monia scored 9 points apiece in victory.

Gudaitis got Rytas going with a jump hook and back-to-back baskets by Gordon boosted the guests' lead to 2-6. Khimki kept struggling to score and back-to-back triples by Fisher and Gordon made it a double-digit lead, 6-16. Khimki improved its defense and free throws by Egor Vialtsev and Stanislav Ilnitskiy brought Khimki within 20-21 after 10 minutes. A three-pointer by Viatsev gave Khimki its first lead, 27-24, early in the second quarter. Rowland had 11 points in less than 4 minutes to boost the hosts' lead to 38-29. Logan and Gordon cut Rytas's deficit to 38-37 at halftime. Gudaitis and Gordon fueled a 0-9 run which put the guests in charge, 43-49, soon after the break. Khimki found a new go-to guy in Pullen, who had 8 points in a game-changing 16-0 run which gave his team a 59-49 margin late in the third quarter. Gordon and Gudaitis brought Rytas as close as 61-59 with under 6 minutes left but Marko Todorovic stepped up in crunch time to make Khimki seal the outcome.

"It was very tough and difficult game. It’s a start of the EuroCup and Lietuvos Rytas is a very strong team that plays really hard and tough. It was a very important win for us. We made many mistakes tonight but every moment we had patience to play defense and offense to win the game. That mental preparation was very important for this success. Pullen showed a really good game but he didn’t start well. He was excited with a lot of desire to win the game quickly. In the second half he did very well what we need from him. He will play better every game."
PACESAS, TOMAS
Lietuvos Rytas Vilnius
"Congratulations to Khimki on this win but at the same time, I want to congratulate my team because we fought and showed character. Even when we were trailing we didn’t yield and it’s very essential. We know why we lost; the reason is very simple: when you make 22 turnovers, it is impossible to win the game, especially if you play against such a strong opponent as Khimki. At the same time, we did not score many open shots. Along with turnovers it deprived us of the possibility to win, though until the very last moment until Pullen’s triple we stayed in the game, and it was unclear how it could have resolved. The reasons are clear, and we will try to make fewer mistakes, which will give us better chances to stay in the game and win in such a strong group."

"It was all right. I could have played better. I missed some easy shots. But it was my first game for Khimki and hopefully I will get into a rhythm the next few games. I’m comfortable about creating a mismatch and get my shot which happened in the end. It was good tonight. It’s early in the season and the teams just try to find the rhythm. We have to figure out how to become more consistent and focused."
GUDAITIS, ARTURAS
Lietuvos Rytas Vilnius
"Both teams had ups and downs and huge scoring runs; first one team got ahead and then another one caught it up. We showed character but at the same time made too many mistakes. It allowed our opponent to gain many offensive boards. They were the two main reasons for a defeat. You can’t play all forty minutes at one level. Tonight Khimki also had bad times."
