Tofas downs Limoges in season opener
Tofas Bursa got off to a strong start in Group B by downing Limoges CSP 84-71 at home on Tuesday. D.J. White led the winners with 19 points, Tarik Phillip added 17 points, 10 rebounds and 7 assists, Matt Lojeski tallied 15 points and 8 assists, Devin Williams netted 13 points and Muhaymin Mustafa contributed 12 for Tofas. Semaj Christon led Limoges with 21 points, Jerry Boutsiele added 14, Vincent Sanford 11 and Marcus Ginyard 10. Tofas led 42-33 at halftime, extended its margin to 65-49 and only allowed Limoges to rally once the outcome was clear.
Pivotal performer
Phillip made his EuroCup debut one to remember. He narrowly missed a triple-double, getting 17 points, 10 rebounds and 7 assists. Phillip also drew 5 fouls to finish the game with a PIR of 27.
Game-changing moment
Limoges improved its defense midway through the third quarter and managed to get within 55-49, but Lojeski and Williams found a couple of easy baskets and Phillip had more points in a 10-0 run that put Tofas ahead for good, 65-49, at the end of the third quarter.
Stellar stat
Lojeski returned to the EuroCup for the first time since in the 2012-13 season, in which he played six games for Telenet Ostend. He finished the game with 8 assists for a new career-high. He dished more assists than any of his 143 Turkish Airlines EuroLeague games with Olympiacos Piraeus and Panathinaikos OPAP Athens - his EuroLeague career-high in that competition was 6.
Did you notice?
Tofas avenged a painful EuroCup home loss against Limoges from last season. Tofas would have qualified for the Top 16 with a win, but Limoges prevailed, 92-98, and ended up reaching the Top 16 with another win against Arka Gdynia in regular season Round 10.
Next game
Both teams return to EuroCup action next week. Tofas visits Partizan NIS Belgrade in the Serbian capital on Tuesday, October 8. Limoges hosts Rytas Vilnius one day later.
