Maccabi thumps Olympiacos in Piraeus

Maccabi Fox Tel Aviv completed a sweep of the season's first double-round week by dominating host Olympiacos Piraeus for a 65-90 road win on Friday. Maccabi raised its record to 4-2 with its fourth consecutive victory while Olympiacos dropped to 2-4. Maccabi hit 13 three-pointers in a game that the visitors took over after the first couple of minutes to outscored their hosts in every quarter. Tyler Dorsey was Maccabi's top scorer with 19 points on the strength of 4 three-pointers. Scottie Wilbekin hit 4 shots from deep, as well, on the way to 19 points, while Nate Wolters scored 10 for the winners. Georgios Printezis led Olympiacos with 16 points and Brandon Paul landed 12.

Olympiacos got off to the better start and led 7-2 thanks to a triple from Vassilis Spanoulis. The hosts extended that lead to 9-2 after Paul's steal and breakaway slam. Maccabi called a timeout and got it back to 11-9 but the home side scored again through Printezis to make it 15-9. Maccabi stayed close and with a couple of stops and scores from Quincy Any, Elijah Bryant and Tarik Black forged a 15-15 tie. The visitors never looked back after that. They took their first lead with a couple of free throws from Black and when Othello Hunter scored at the buzzer held a 21-24 advantage after 10 minutes. Olympiacos got off to the quicker start in the second quarter with Kevin Punter hitting 2 triples. Maccabi came to life and extended its lead to 22-29 before a three from Wilbekin made it 24-32. A couple of quick Olympiacos scores and free throws from Paul suddenly made it 28-32. Wilbekin hit his third three-pointer to make it a 30-38 game before Nate Wolters joined him to extend the lead to 34-43. Punter hit a three at the buzzer and despite Maccabi's dominance thus far, it was 40-45 at the break. Olympiacos reduced that further with a triple by Paul at 43-45 early in the third quarter. Wilbekin's four-point play was followed by Wolters drilling from deep to open a 50-59 Maccabi advantage. John DiBartolomeo joined the fun as Maccabi continued to assert control. At the end of the third, it was 56-68 after the visitors outscored their opponents 16-23 in that 10 minute period. Maccabi's lead kept increasing as Hunter scored early in the fourth to make it 56-70. Every time Olympiacos scored, Maccabi responded. They made it 61-79 midway through the fourth quarter and it looked like Olympiacos would have to put this one down to experience. Dorsey hit another three as Maccabi closed it out early.

Pivotal performer

Tyler Dorsey announced himself on the stage with a 19-point game that outlined his ability and hustle. The 23-year-old showed off some beautiful touch on 4-for-9 shooting from deep.

Did you notice?

Maccabi is building up a head of steam, having won four in a row with this, its first road win, after having started off with back-to-back road defeats.

Stat of the game

All the talk after the game was about Maccabi's points from their defense. And with good reason as they scored 22 fastbreak points and 18 from turnovers.

Next game

Olympiacos are at home again next Thursday, when Anadolu Efes Istanbul comes to Peace and Friendship Stadium. Maccabi return home the same night to host ALBA Berlin.

"First of all, congratulations to the Maccabi team, I think they played a really good game, as we expected. They were physical, intense defensively. They didn't give us anything easy, especially in the second half. They took us out of our angles and our spots. The most disappointing thing is that we quit when they got the lead. When we felt like we couldn't win the game and the game was going away, we just stopped fighting. This is the worst thing. We didn't do the things we planned, offensively and defensively. We couldn't execute our offenses and run and get what we wanted from our offense. We didn’t want to play defense and they scored in transition. You have to sprint, you have to run, you have to talk, you have to point and we just gave them those easy baskets. We tried to change the defense at the end to a switching defense and it wasn't bad and maybe we should have done it sooner."
SFAIROPOULOS, IOANNIS
Maccabi FOX Tel Aviv
"Yes, this is what we want. It's our goal to start from good defense and to take advantage of our good defense offensively. I think they performed really well on both sides of the court. It's not just the transition points and the points we scored from turnovers. Also in the set offense, we kept patience, we moved the ball and we tried to find the best option to shoot. I think that's why we had good percentages...I think our players were really committed today. We played with great energy and you saw everyone who came off the bench helped the team to play and the energy that we played the whole game. We allowed just 25 points in the second half and that was the big difference we had."

DORSEY, TYLER
Maccabi FOX Tel Aviv
"I'm coming off the bench and I need to provide that energy every night. Like I said, in the first half, we picked it up defensively, which led us to run-outs, transitions, and we made the right reads. We played well in the second half, a lot better than the first."
WILBEKIN, SCOTTIE
Maccabi FOX Tel Aviv
"I try to pick and choose my spots and take what the defense gives me. It's great; these back-to-back games are tough. Both teams are tired but we just try to fight through it and get two wins. It's extremely valuable."
