Strasbourg remained tied for first place in Group B with a 91-72 home win over Besiktas Cola Turka on Tuesday night in France. Chuck Eidson was the hero of an 18-0 fourth-quarter run that put a close game away and improved Strasbourg's record to 4-1. Strasbourg is tied atop the group with FMP, which defeated Snaidero Udine 82-88 on the road earlier in the evening. Besiktas fell to 2-3, tied with Snaidero and Ventspils for third place in the group. Eidson finished with 24 points, Michael Smith drilled four threes on the way to 17 points and 6 rebounds, Afik Nissim added 15 – 13 during a five-minute third-quarter stretch to keep his team in the game – and Lonnie Cooper finished with 11 points and 8 assists. Aubrey Reese led Besiktas with 24, Ozer Cevher added 17 and Djuro Ostojic 10.

Besiktas won the opening tip and went up 0-2 immediately went on the board via a Cevher layup. Strasbourg's first points came seconds later through Eidson. The game was a tight affair through the opening minutes, with the teams remaining within a basket of one another and the score being tied six times in the opening quarter until a Reese triple put Besiktas up 20-25. Gauthier Darrigand's free throw made it 21-25 at the end of the opening period. Smith started the second period with a three and Dirk Madrich added three the hard way as Strasbourg regained the lead. The rest of the half played out the same way, with the tams trading baskets and the lead shifting from side to side. A Cooper jumper gave the hosts a 40-37 lead with a minute left, but Reese poured in 6 in the last minute of the half to give Besiktas a 40-43 halftime advantage.

Ostojic's layup put Besiktas up 5 on the first play of the second half and two minutes later the visitors led 44-50 after an Erkan Veyseloglu triple. Smith got Strasbourg going with a triple, Nissim caught fire with another three to tie the score at 52-52, and then added another jumper and a triple to fend Besiktas off. Nissim would score another three and hit two more free throws to give him 13 in the third period and Strasbourg a 63-59 lead. Reese closed the gap to 67-64 early in the fourth quarter, but Strasbourg put an end to the game at that point. Strasbourg's players were everywhere over the next few minutes, stiffing Besiktas on defense and pouring in the points on offense. Eidson started the run with a triple, added two free throws and then a layup, before John McCord added 4 points. Eidson had another score, Smith drilled a triple and then Aerick Sanders picked up 2 points to wrap up an 18-0 run that gave the hosts an insurmountable 85-64 lead with four minutes to go. Cevher ended the run with a three, but Cooper scored from the line and Madrich hit a jumper to make sure that Besiktas would not eye a comeback as the hosts cruised to a big win.

Head Coaches

GIRARD, ERIC
Strasbourg
"Congratulations to Besiktas, they were playing well because to play a game it takes two good teams. The fact they played without Thomas added rhythm to the group and provided a great team spirit to Strasbourg. For us it was the best game this season in terms of intensity, efficiency against a good opponent. It is really a team victory, All the players contributed to the victory, but we won’t get fully satisfied with it, we can face our future with optimism, we need to confirm now especially against Bourg this weekend in the French Championship."
DIDIN, MURAT
Besiktas Istanbul
"Congratulations to Strasbourg, it was a tough game but we knew it. Strasbourg played as a team, we did the best with the team we had it was difficult to play without Jamal Thomas and our captain. We had to slow down Strasbourg’s rhythm and intensity, we tried to do what we could in the last ten minutes. It was a great basketball game with great spectators of the two nationalities."

Players

SMITH, MICHAEL
Strasbourg
"We needed this win. We played a top defense in the second half. Loonie played very well, everybody was involved in this game and Loonie gave good balls for us to shoot straight away. We played basketball together and the message was “this is how Strasbourg plays."
BILGIN, LEVENT
Besiktas Istanbul
"We wanted to win this game, because we already had two losses and we wanted to compensate with this win, until the last quarter, the game was tight and it was going well but we just made easy mistakes, we went to ten points then fifteen points, it was a game that we could win, we’ll try to compensate this loss with another win."
