AEK Athens claims first win over Nizhny

Group F endured a shakeup in the Greek capital where AEK Athens mowed down Nizhny Novgorod 87-70 for its first win. The result improved the home team to 2-1, while Nizhny suffered its first loss and fell to 1-2. Loukas Mavrokefalidis starred for the winners with 19 points and 13 rebounds. Milan Milosevic added 17 points, while Chris Warren scored 14 and Malik Hairston 12. Ivan Strebkov and Maxim Grigoryev paced Nizhny with 13 points apiece, while Dimitriy Khvostov recorded 11 points and 5 assists and Evgeny Baburin and Rasid Mahalbasic each scored 10. The game was close throughout the first half, but Milosevic highlighted a 17-0 third-quarter run that paved AEK’s road to victory.

Victor Rudd opened the scoring with a triple before Grigoryev gave Nizhny a 0-5 start. Warren and Hairston promptly tied things for AEK. Warren nailed a triple for the hosts’ first lead, but Grigoryev soon connected from downtown to make it 8-12. The difference swelled to 14-20 on Grigoryev’s next three-pointer. AEK rallied to tie it on Milosevic free throws. A pair of Strebkov triples left Nizhny with a 24-26 edge after 10 minutes. An eventful second quarter saw seven ties and five lead changes! After a three by Rudd and a bucket by Mahalbasic gave Nizhny a promising 5-point cushion, back-to-back threes by Nontas Papantoniou and Mavrokefalidis left AEK with a 47-46 halftime advantage.

Mahalbasic’s put-back put Nizhny ahead again only for Milosevic to drain a pair of triples in a 17-0 run that turned the game on its head at 64-50. The AEK defense had held Nizhny scoreless for more than five minutes during that stretch. Strebkov ended the drought with a three and later finished the quarter with a triple to close within 66-60 through three quarters. Gianis Kalampokis and Mavrokefalidis helped keep AEK in control before Hairston’s put-back and Dimitrios Katsivelis’s steal and layup boosted the lead to double figures. Warren made it 76-63 as the local fans started to celebrate. Grigoryev’s triple did little to bother AEK as Hairson buried 4 free throws in the penultimate minutes and Katsivelis sank 2 more as AEK chalked up a big win.

SAKOTA, DRAGAN
AEK Athens
"Congratulations to my team, it was a great victory against Nizhny. The performance as a team was very good and I have to say that this shows what we have seen many times in workouts. We will continue with more ambition and each game will try to be a better team."
BAGATSKIS, AINARS
Nizhny Novgorod
"Four days ago when we faced CSKA we lost much power. AEK played very tough in the paint and we went to three-pointers for a solution. We relaxed later and in the last minutes AEK seemed that it won the game."
