Calathes narrowly misses triple-double as Greens edge Efes

Nick Calathes had a career-game and was 1 rebound shy of a triple-double in leading Panathinaikos Superfoods Athens to its third win in a row, a thrilling 81-82 decision over Anadolu Efes Istanbul at Sinan Erdem Dome. The game was decided at the buzzer with Efes having 11 seconds for the final possession, but James Gist blocked a jumper by Errick McCollum to secure the win for the Greens. The game hero, however, was Calathes with a monster game. He scored 13 of his career-high 29 points in the fourth quarter and added 10 assists and 9 rebounds to lead Panathinaikos to a 5-3 record. Gist and Chris Singleton had 11 points apiece in victory. Brock Motum led Efes with 21 points and 5 rebounds, McCollum finished with 16 points, Vladimir Stimac scored 15 and Bryant Dunston had 12 in the losing effort.

The game was at a fast pace from the get-go. Stimac and Ricky Ledo scored from close range for the hosts, but Gist and Thanasis Antetokounmpo had dunks and Calathes nailed a three-pointer as Panathinaikos led 6-9. A triple from Singleton followed by a Calathes dish for a another Antetokounmpo dunk and a three-point play by Calathes extended the lead to 10-19. K.C. Rivers hit a three that made it 14-24, but jumpers from McCollum and Dogus Balbay with a Motum triple in between helped Efes close to 21-28 after 10 minutes. Motum scored twice inside early in the second quarter and then added a triple that cut it to 28-31. A pair of McCollum jumpers and Motum’s third three-pointer gave the hosts a 37-33 edge. But Ian Vougioukas scored 7 points on three trips down the floor before Calathes drove for a pair of easy-looking layups that helped Panathinaikos take a 44-48 lead into halftime.

The pace slowed down in the second half. Stimac had a pair of close range baskets that got Efes within 49-51, but Calathes dished a pair of assists, made free throws and hit a jumper to open a 49-55 advantage. Calathes and Gist connected for an alley-oop dunk, which was Calathes’s 10thassist, but McCollum hit back-to-back jumpers that kept Efes close, 57-60. Motum’s put-back made it 60-62 after 30 minutes, before Efes scored the first 9 points of the fourth quarter as Motum hit a baseline floater and dished a pass for a Dunston dunk, and Simon nailed a triple. Nikos Pappas snapped a 12-0 run with a three-pointer, before Calathes strung together 8 points, including a triple that made it 73-75. Simon’s triple put Efes back in front, but Calathes drove for a layup. Rivers tied it at 79-79 by beating the shot-clock with a tough jumper, followed by Calathes doing the same with a three-pointer that made it 79-82 with 48.1 seconds to go. Dunston had a dunk on the other end, and Efes made a defensive stand and had 11 seconds to convert on the final possession, but Gist blocked McCollum’s jumper as time expired.

"A tough game and a tough loss. Congrats to Panathinaikos, they played tough. They deserved to win, but we would have deserved it if we had won, too. I think we started the game bad, they scored too easy, but after that we played much better and we had control of the game until the end. But with the game on the line, they scored triples and our shots went out. And they hit last-second shots. Things like that happen. On the last possession, we could have found a better shot."

"We are very happy for this win. We want to dedicate this win for all the families and all the people in Athens that lost someone in the big catastrophe and we feel very sorry for that. It was a tough game, which we expected. In the last part of the game we controlled well our emotions, played good defense, and that’s why in the end game went our way. I am very happy for Calathes, he is a worker, always on the court, he tries to play defense, to run, to play his best every day. You must be happy for such a player. He did an incredible job on offense and defense; he was our leader on the court, and was a key for our win. Also, in the last part of the game, Pappas changed the game in a good way for us. We attacked deeper on the pick-and-roll defense, which we made mistakes before, especially in the third quarter, when we played so far out of the paint. We changed this thinking in the last part of the game, attacked deeper and it worked to our advantage."

"It was a tough, uptempo game. Our defense was better in the second half. But they hit some tough shots down the stretch. It is a tough way to lose, but credits to them. They played really well and hit tough shots at the end."

"I feel good, we got a win. It is a big won for us. Our team is playing good basketball right now. We did not have much time to prepare, but coach got us ready with the right mindset. And we made big plays when it counted. The triple double does not matter, the win is what it counts. For me to get a triple-double or not get a triple-double, for our team to get a win is a lot more important. We have a lot of shooters, for our bigs to set down screens, and to move the ball, we have to find our shooters to be a very good team and to win games like this. We are going to need to pass the ball and not hold it as much as we did beginning of the season."
