Flaccadori leads Trento past Ulm

Dolomiti Energia Trento bounced back from recent losses in Group D by thrashing ratiopharm Ulm 77-66 at home on Wednesday. Both teams now have 2-3 records and are tied for fourth place with ASVEL Villeurbanne. Diego Flaccadori led the winners with an all-around performance of 20 points, 4 rebounds, 6 assists and 3 steals. Ojars Silins added 13 points, Jorge Gutierrez had 12 while Beto Gomes got 11 for Trento, whose defense held Ulm to 3-of-22 three-point shooting. Jerrelle Benimon led Ulm with 12 points while Da'Sean Butler and Ismet Akpinar each added 11 for the guests. Flaccadori and Silins shined early to give Trento a 17-4 lead. Trento boosted its margin to 25-10 after 10 minutes and then again to 49-25 at halftime behind an outstanding Flaccadori, who scored 13 points by then. Nothing changed after the break, as even when Ulm managed to get within 71-61 midway through the fourth quarter, Trento improved its defense and cruised to a well-deserved win.

Silins and Dominique Sutton got Trento going with consecutive layups. Ryan Thompson scored down low and Butler added a jump hook, but Flaccadori, Silims and Gomes each struck from downtown in an 11-0 run that Sutton capped with a layup for a 17-4 Trento lead. Trey Lewis and Yannick Franke tried to change things for Ulm but a floater by Toto Forray and a buzzer-beating layup by Chane Behanan gave the hosts a 25-10 lead after 10 minutes. Benimon took over with a three-point play and Toure Murry added a layup to give Ulm hope at 25-15. It didn't last long, as Flaccadori and Filippo Baldi Rossi nailed a triple each in an 8-0 run that broke the game open, 33-15. A layup by Gutierrez and Sutton's dunked off a steal sparked a 12-2 run that Silins capped from beyond the arc for a 49-25 Trento lead at halftime. Lewis and Butler combined for all points in a 0-7 Ulm run in the third quarter, but Silins and Gutierrez kept the hosts way ahead, 52-32. Gutierrez followed a floater with a three-pointer and a layup-plus-free throw by Flaccadori boosted the hosts' margin to 61-39. Benimon and Joshcka Ferner brought Ulm a bit closer, 64-47, after 30 minutes. Benimon and Ferner kept pacing Ulm and 8 unanswered points by Akpinar allowed the visitors to get within 71-61 midway through the fourth quarter. Trento improved its defense in crunch time, as a three-pointer by Gomes and free throws by Gutierrez sealed the outcome down the stretch.

Both teams play on the road next week. Trento visits ASVEL Villeurbanne on Tuesday while Ulm travels to Turkey to face Tofas Bursa on Wednesday.

Head Coaches

BUSCAGLIA, MAURIZIO
Dolomiti Energia Trento
"I think that our job in the first half was the key to this game. Then obviously, after that, we struggled in the last 10 minutes, we were just thinking on offense. We didn't rebound in the last six, seven minutes. We played very well with extra passes today, simple drive and kick, and the key was this, the first 27, 28 minutes. But it is a good win for us, talking about the moment. It is a good win."
LEIBENATH, THORSTEN
ratiopharm Ulm
"The way we played in the first half was far too passive - so we did not deserve the win. On the positive side, however, some of the guys fought to cut the lead and showed character. "

Players

SILINS, OJARS
Dolomiti Energia Trento
"The key of this game was, I think, aggressiveness. We were aggressive and focused from the first minute, and when we are that, we can show our best, starting from defense and then being more fluid on offense."
