Madrid crushes arch-rival Barcelona in record fashion

In a Clásico that will be remembered by its fans, Real Madrid sent a message that echoed all around the competition by crushing archrivals FC Barcelona Lassa 63-102 at Palau Blaugrana on Friday. Madrid improved to 6-2 and ranks second in the standings while Barcelona dropped to 4-4. Madrid led from start to finish, and registered its largest win over Barcelona in Turkish Airlines EuroLeague action, topping its 100-62 victory in 2014 Final Four semifinals in Milan. Llull finished with 20 points and 7 assists, while Randolph had 18 points plus 11 rebounds and 3 blocks. Jaycee Carroll netted 19 points on 4-for-6 three-point shooting. No Madrid player spent more than 22 minutes on the floor. Tyrese Rice had game-high 23 points for Barcelona, Joey Dorsey collected 10 points and 7 rebounds, and Aleksandar Vezenkov pulled down a career-high 10 rebounds along with scoring 5 points. Madrid dynamited the game in the first half, getting a 32-54 lead, hitting 8-of-11 three-point shots (72.7%), dishing 13 assists, forcing its opponents into 9 turnovers and limiting Barcelona to just 1-of-8 shots from downtown (12.5%). Llull had 17 points and 5 assists before the break and Randolph added 10 and 3 blocks, including an outstanding one on Joey Dorsey.

A three-pointer by Luka Doncic and back-to-back fast break layups by Jonas Maciulis and Llull gave Madrid an early 0-7 lead. Rice followed a layup with a jumper but Jaycee Carroll and Felipe Reyes struck from downtown to keep the guests fully in charge, 7-15. Marcus Eriksson and Ante Tomic stepped up for Barcelona but Llull singlehandedly gave Madrid a 13-20 lead. Carroll followed a triple with a jumper and a tip-in by Randolph boosted the guests' lead to 17-29 after 10 minutes. Andres Nocioni took over early in the second quarter and Randolph had a huge block on Joey Dorsey's dunk attempt but Petteri Koponen and Brad Oleson brought Barcelona within single digits, 25-34. Llull and Randolph scored 4 points each in a 0-10 run that broke the game open, 25-44. Llull banked in a rainbow three-pointer and Rudy Fernandez also hit one from beyond the arc for a 28-53 Madrid lead, which Barcelona cut to 31-54 at halftime. Reyes hit a baseline jumper soon after the break and three-pointers by Llull and Maciulis kept Madrid way ahead, 36-62. A fast break layup by Doncic soon made Barcelona call timeout at 37-68. Jonathan Holmes hit a corner triple and Dorsey added a layup but Madrid kept full control of the game, 46-75, after 30 minutes. Madrid kept using long possessions to run the game clock down, as Barcelona could not find the way to the basket for 6 minutes at the start of fourth quarter. A corner three-pointer by Fernandez and a put-back layup by Randolph sealed the outcome. Madrid had plenty of time to celebrate an impressing road win, as margin was as big as 54-101 late in the final quarter. In Round 9, Barcelona travels to face Galatasaray Odebank Istanbul, while Madrid faces Unics Kazan on home floor.

"It was one of the toughest nights for our club, for our team. We were part of one big loss this like against Madrid. It was a crazy game: they started scoring everything and somehow, after four or five minutes, we gave up and stopped playing. We stopped trying from the fifth minute of the game.. I can say many things about our schedule, the games we played in a row or that we are without five basic players. After so many games, with such a schedule, we looked like we were exhausted, physically and mentally. Physically, I can understand but mentally I don't understand why we stopped fighting from the beginning of the game. I have to congratulate Madrid for this win, they played an excellent game. I have to apologize to our fans, who gave us great support, even after the game. They were still there singing for our team. For us, it is a big lesson. We cannot get lower than this. We have to use this, me, the team, the club, everybody, as a big lesson for the future. Let's wait to see our reaction. To be honest, I didn't expect the team to play like this. It is very difficult for our team. We had a tough meeting right now, inside the locker room. This is sports, this is life, and very bad things happen, but you have to play with pride. I will try to convince everybody inside the team. Starting from this day, we have to go on and keep our heads up. We have to fight from now on for every game. I can use this game as an example. We will try harder from now on. Mentally, we were not ready for this game and I am responsible for this."
LASO, PABLO

"First of all, congratulations to my team for the win. We played a good all-around game, defensively and offensively. I believe that we have been able to dominate many aspects of the game and hd the control of the game. I am happy because everyone who stepped on court was important for us, knowing the responsability he had in the game. I am very proud and happy for the team. It was an important win - it is not easy to win at Palau Blaugrana, but it is just another game in a very difficult EuroLeague, a very demanding competition and we were able to be really solid from the very beginning. During my years coaching this team, we had many good games in the EuroLeague in which I was proud of the team. We know how difficult every game is in this competition but a game between Barcelona and Madrid draws a lot of attention. I am very happy to win at Palau - sometimes the game is broken, like today. We got a big lead in the first half and stayed focused. A team like Barcelona is able to return to the game but we were solid and played at the same level for 40 minutes."

"It was pretty ugly. I think from the first minute, we did not come ready to play. And they obviously came ready to play. Nothing good was coming from us. A terrible performance. We got to bounce back. But there is no time to hold our heads down. We lost, it is a shame, but we have to play again already on Sunday morning. We have real loyal fans, and we have to thank them. They did not deserve to actually watch this game. It is a shame on us."
KOPONEN, PETTERI
FC Barcelona Lassa
"Today, Madrid played good game. Scored everything. We played bad again, both defense and offense. They did what they wanted all the time. We need to learn from this and have to figure it out soon. I want to apologize to the fans who came to support us. It is embarasing how we played today. We have to keep fighting. It is a bad results and we will surly talk in practice tomorrow to try to figure it out."
DONCIC, LUKA
Real Madrid
"We played very good defense. We rebounded well and that helped us. I always say that the most important thing is that we won the game as a team, and only then come my personal stats but truth to be told, I am very happy. We are doing a great job, practicing really hard, really well to get better and grow as a team. Anthony (Randolph) had an excellent game, with three big block. He did a great job."
RANDOLPH, ANTHONY
Real Madrid
"I think we played great as a team. I think defense won us game tonight. We came out and played with a lot more intensity on defensive end than we did last week we played against them in Spanish League. I think everybody played well. We defended well and executed coach’s game plan perfectly. But good thing about it, we have still long way to go and still can get better. I am happy we got the win and played better than what we did last time we played against them when they blew us out."
