Michael Wright - PGE TurowPGE Turow registered its first win in Group G and rejoined the race to make it to the Last 16 by downing previously undefeated Panellinios 81-76 in Zgorzelec, Poland on Tuesday night. Turow improved to 1-3 and faces a do-or-die road battle against Sluc Nancy on January 5, 2010. Meanwhile, Panellinios drops to 3-1 and will qualify if it downs Gran Canaria on the road also on January 5. Konrad Wysocki paced the winners with 22 points on 5-of-8 three-pointers. Michael Wright added 21 points and 8 rebounds while Justin Gray dished 11 assists for Turow. Kostas Charalampidis led Panellinios with 30 points. Britton Johnsen added 12 while Rod Blakney had 10 for the guests, that led 2-10 early in the game. Robert Witka led a 17-2 run that put Turow ahead for good, 19-12. Wright allowed Turow to extend its margin to 49-39 at halftime. Charalampidis singlehandedly brought Panellinios within 58-56 but an 11-0 run helped Turow to boost its margin to 60-56. Free throws by Wysocki allowed Turow to seal a much-needed home win.

Johnsen and Blakney got Panellinios going with consecutive layups and both players struck from downtown to boost the guests' margin to 2-10. Turow quickly called timeout to adjust its defense and found a go-to guy in Wysocki, that hit back-to-back three-pointers. Wright shined with a layup-plus-foul in a 17-2 run in which Witka downed consecutive triples to give Turow a 19-12 margin. Charalampidis sank a jumper that Wright erased with free throws. Charalampidis and Josh Davis brought Panellinios within 22-20 but back-to-back layups by Michal Chilinsky and Krzysztof Roszyk gave Turow a 26-20 edge after 10 minutes. Charalampidis and Roszyk traded triples early in the second quarter and an unstoppable Wright soon made it a nine-point game, 32-23. Djuro Ostojic and a triple by Manolis Papamakarios brought Panellinios back to life, 34-29. Three-pointers by Gray and Chilinsky boosted the hosts' lead to 40-29. A jumper by Roszyk and a layup off a steal by Brandon Wallace made the guests call timeout at 44-31. Johnsen tried to change things with a triple and free throws by Charalampidis got Panellinios within 46-38. A three-pointer by Chilinsky made Turow restore a double-digit lead, 49-39, at halftime.

Panellinios improved its defense after the break and free throws by Johnsen got the guests within 49-41. Gray stepped up with a jumper but he didn't find much help around. Meanwhile, a layup by Blakney and free throws by Chalarampidis gave Panellinios some hope at 51-45. Wysocki took over with his third triple and soon added a layup but Smith kept Panellinios in the game, 56-48. Charalampidis stayed on fire with consecutive three-pointers that got the guests as close as 56-54. Wright sank a mid-range jumper and Wallace added a put-back layup to give Turow some fresh air, 61-56, after 30 minutes. Wysocki struck again from downtown and Wright scored down low to make Turow restore a double-digit lead, 66-56, early in the fourth quarter. Panellinios had been scoreless for 3 minutes and Wysocki downed another triple for a 69-56 lead, after an 11-0 run. Johnsen tried to ignite his team's comeback but Turow had opted to use long possessions and feed Wright down low for a 73-60 score. Both teams fought for points differential. Nothing changed in the final minutes, as Panellinios only rallied when the outcome was clear and all Turow fans celebrated their team's first 2009-10 Eurocup win minutes before the final buzzer.

"It was a very tough game because we knew that if we lost it we would be out of the competition. And we couldn’t let that happen. We had an unbelievable first half. In the first 17 minutes of the game we had probably one turnover which had never happened before. In the second half it wasn’t that great, we had problems especially with our offensive spacing and timing. I’m very happy with the way we responded in the third and fourth quarters, but unfortunately we did a very, very poor job in the last minute of the game but luckily we didn’t get punished for our mistakes."
ZOUROS, ILIAS

"First of all I must congratulate Turow because tonight they fought much harder than us and were much more determined. We played very bad in the first half. Our defense was terrible and we weren’t focused enough in the first two quarters. In the second half we came back to the game but on the Eurocup level if you don’t pay attention to details you lose. Last week I said that there are no easy games in Eurocup – every game is difficult. But nothing is definite, we have two games left and we have to win both to stay in a game. I wish Turow the best of luck."

"We played hard tonight. We played good team basketball, we were focused and shot the ball really well. Coach Urlep has changed our defensive schemes, we started to play harder on the defensive end of the floor. He has given us a lot of confidence, we started to run a transition offense and told us if we’re open we have to shoot that ball. I wasn’t surprised with them double-teamed me because that’s what they did last week. I practiced this for a whole week so I knew I had to distribute the ball and our guys hit the open shots."
OSTOJIC, DJURO
Panellinios OPAP Athens
"This is basketball, everything is possible. In the end we made some easy baskets but it was too little too late to win that game. We weren’t aggressive almost all the game, we made lots of mistakes in defense in the first half and it wasn’t a good game for us because we have big goals ahead of us."
