Banca Sella Biella edged La Caja de Canarias 81-75 on the opening game of Day 2 in the The Barking Abbey Academy Euroleague Basketball Junior Classification Tournament in a Group B game on Friday morning in London, England. Biella climbs to a 1-1 record, while Canarias dropped the second game in a row, and will seek for its first win later on today against USK Future Stars Prague. The winner of the tournament will advance to the Nike International Junior Tournament to be held during the 2010 Euroleague Final Four event in Paris, France. Biella used a good first quarter to hold a double-digit half time lead, but Christian Diaz carried Canarias back to the game in the third quarter, all the way to a close end until the last seconds. William Magarity topped Biella with 25 points and 13 rebounds, Stefano Appendni added 14 while Pietro Danna finished with 12. Diaz scored 2 points in the first half, added 17 in the third and finished with a total of 22 and 7 steals followed by Jonay Cazorla who posted 18 points and 14 rebounds.
Eric Lombardi was active in the paint to score all of Biella's first 5 points, but a team effort late in the quarter produced a 7-0 run and an 18-9 lead. Danna nailed a three pointer close to the buzzer to set the score on 24-14. Stefano Stassi and Magarity dominated the boards and created points from mid and close ranges to push the gap up to 36-22, before Canarias scored a point from the line to cap the first half scores. Stassi remained aggressive and after 24 minutes Biella held a 22 point lead, but then Diaz got his wake up call and started to work. 17 third quarter points made a difference, and by the end of the third quarter the gap was in reach, only 59-49, but Canarias wasn't about to stop. The undersized Cazorla cut the margin by half, but Magarity continued to score and with 4 minutes to play Biella held a 69-60 lead. Gabriel Bolanos connected 5 points in a row to create a 10 point unanswered run by Canarias and take the lead for the first time in the game, to see the lead change hands in the next 4 possessions before Appendni hit the crucial three pointer and give Biella a 76-74 lead. Diaz tried to take over the game, but forced plays and saw Danna secure the win on the foul line at the other end.
