Fenerbahce uses big fourth quarter to down Milan

Fenerbahce Istanbul survived an intense battle at a sold-out Mediolanum Forum in the fashion capital to earn a 70-79 victory over EA7 Emporio Armani Milan. The win took the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague runner-up’s record to 6-3, while Milan slipped to 4-5. A powerful final quarter was the key, with Fenerbahce restricting Milan to just 7 points in the final 10 minutes to snap a two-game losing run on the road. Kostas Sloukas was the outstanding performer, combining a game-high 18 points with 7 rebounds and 3 assists, while backcourt partner Bobby Dixon added 14 points. Nikola Kalinic also impressed with 13 points, Ekpe Udoh scored 11 and Luigi Datome 10. Rakim Sanders paced the home team with 17 points, with Jamel McLean posting 15 points and 8 rebounds and Krunoslav Simon scoring 11.

Two players shone in the early going, with Kalinic scoring 6 of his team’s first 9 points, but Milan Macvan responded with 5 of the first 7 for Milan. Then Sloukas burst into life with a pair of quick-fire triples to give Fenerbahce a double-digit lead. Sanders ended the first quarter with a long-range triple to make it 17-21. Fenerbahce kept hold of its slim lead during an attritional second quarter, but Milan was dominant in the third when it tied the game on a Simon triple and took the lead, 57-56, through Alessandro Gentile. With McLean and Sanders excelling, Milan led 63-58 at the end of the quarter, but Sloukas and Bobby Dixon helped Fenerbahce restore its advantage as the visiting defense stiffened its resolve to seal a very hard-earned victory.

"It's difficult to point out only one problem. Early we didn't play good defense and we allowed too many rebounds under our own basket. The third was great especially in terms of energy. I'm disappointed with the fourth quarter, the way we didn't move the ball. We didn't have the right answers against their switching defense. Maybe someone didn't believe enough in that phase, because we made some silly mistakes both offensively and defensively."
OBRADOVIC, ZELJKO
Fenerbahce Istanbul

"I believe our third quarter was a disaster. It is impossible to play with this kind of concentration. Our key players did stupid fouls, and Milan came back to the game very, very easy. It is true we played good defense. We knew Milano averages 90 points, and we talked before game we have to play hard defense, and not let them score easy points. For three quarters we played very good, except third quarter."

"We played against an excellent offensive team, which has averaged 90 points, so we tried to play good defense against their main creators. In the first half we controlled the game; they scored some very difficult shot in the last second, but this was our only problem. The third quarter was very bad defensively because two important players, Kalinic and Vesely, were on the bench. But in the last quarter our point guards Sloukas and Dixon controlled the game. I am very happy that we beat a very good team on the road, but we had the same problems."

"We lost the game in the first half when the execution was not up to our standard. The effort in the third quarter was huge and we paid for it in the fourth when our energy was low. "
SLOUKAS, KOSTAS
Fenerbahce Istanbul
"Sometimes I play good, and sometimes I don’t play good. We took a difficult and good win. We need to continue like this. I think we controlled most of the game, and I am very happy that we won. We knew they play very good on home court. We stayed focused and with our plan."
