Zenit shoots at club-record pace into second place

A battle for second place in Group C went to a red-hot visiting team as Zenit St Petersburg invaded the Audi Dome and stole off with an 88-99 victory against host FC Bayern Munich. Those 99 points are Zenit's best ever in what is its sixth EuroCup season. Both teams are now 3-2 but Zenit holds second place in the group due to having beaten Bayern in both of their games. This time, Zenit took off early and was ahead by 9 or more points at the end of each quarter en route to victory. Three Zenit players made 4 or more three-pointers to set a club record and a season-high among all EuroCup teams with 17 strikes from downtown. Ryan Toolson made 5 of 8 and led Zenit with 20 points. Aaron White followed with 18, while Stefan Markovic and Janis Timma, authors of 4 triples each, had 14 points apiece, not to mention 10 and 7 assists, respectively. Bayern got 20 points from Nick Johnson, 13 from Reggie Redding and 10 each from Maxi Kleber and Devin Booker, but had no answer in the end for Zenit's marksmanship.

Triples by Toolson, White and Evgeny Valiev staked Zenit an early 7-15 lead. That stretched to 17-29 when Toolson ended the first quarter from downtown on the buzzer. Johnson got Bayern back within 36-42 but Toolson's fourth three-pointer restored big leads that reached 42-51 at the half. Markovic, White and Toolson all hit from long-range as the difference climbed again to 59-74 before Kleber's three-point play ended the third quarter. Kleber shot from deep himself to cut the difference again to 71-76 midway through the fourth, but soon Timma and Pavel Sergeev were hitting triples at 75-88 as Zenit kept blasting its way to a key victory.

FC Bayern Munich
"I do not usually give much statistics, but if you get 25 offensive rebounds today and you do not make something of it, you have to look for the reasons. Zenit played outstanding today. Of course you also have incredibly experienced players. We lost against a team that played better basketball today. They punished each of our mistakes. I am very grateful to the fans for their support, we needed it. Unfortunately, we missed a big shot when we were close."
KARASEV, VASILY
Zenit St Petersburg
"It was a very important game and a very important victory for us after the defeats against CSKA in the league and against Malaga in the EuroCup. We had a big rotation today as the last injured players returned to the squad. That was the main reason for our victory. We had only one big problem today, that was the offensive rebounding of Bayern, of which we allowed 25. The atmosphere here was great."
