Hapoel Galil Elyon outlasted the Antwerp Giants 93-83 on Tuesday in Kfar Blum, Israel, for the team's first ever victory in the ULEB Cup. The result saw Galil's record improve to 1-2 in Group E ahead of a trip to KK Buducnost next week. Meanwhile Antwerp dropped to 0-3 and will look for its first win when it hosts Swans Gmunden next week. The game was close for most of the first half, until Mike Campbell heated up and gave the hosts a 41-34 halftime lead. Galil stormed out for the second half with an 11-2 run and continued to pull away as the lead peaked north of 20 points. However Antwerp led by Kris Sergeant stormed back in the fourth quarter and closed the gap to just 8 before running out of time. Campbell, Clif Brown and Gili Mossinson led Galil with 19 points apiece, while Or Eitan added 16. Sergeant paced Antwerp with 24 points, Ryan Sears added 18 points and 6 assists, Aleksander Lichodzijewski scored 16 and David Toya 11.

Galil won the opening tip and immediately attacked the basket as Tony Kitchings scored the game's first points, but at the other end Lichodzijewski hit a three from the top of the key to get Antwerp on the board. Eitan and Brown fueled the hosts' attack in the opening period as Galilled 20-16 after 10 minutes. Lichodzijewski and Toya kept Antwerp close and the visitors went on to take a narrow lead, but Campbell had the hot hand down down the stretch, hitting two threes – including a deep one as the halftime buzzer sounded – to put Galil up 41-34 at the break. Campbell kept it up as the second half started and the lead quickly grew until Eitan drilled a triple to cap an 11-2 run that put Galilup 16. Sergeant answered with a three for Antwerp, but Galil kept coming. The lead reached 20 on a Doron Sheffer three and peaked at 67-45 on a Yogev Ohayon layup late in the third period. Lichodzijewski and Sergeant continued to fight for Antwerp, but Brown kept the hosts up 72-55 at the end of the third period. Sergeant's layup and three cut the gap to 12, but Galil head coach Eli Kanetti called a timeout and revamped the defense, which slowed down the visitors' comeback. Antwerp didn't quit and cut the lead to 84-75 on a Sears triple and a Toya basket with two minutes remaining. Sergeant added another three, but Galil started to kill the clock and hit its free throws in the final minute to secure the win.

Hapoel Galil Elyon
"It's good that we won, it sure took long enough. Even tonight, we led but then took our feet off the gas, lost confidence and they came back. But I'm glad we won and I hope this restores our confidence in the team and the players' individual abilities. We have problems and a short rotation, but the excuses don't matter. We have to bring the right players. Playing two games a week isn't easy, so we used nine or 10 players."
VAN CAMP, SVEN
Antwerp Giants
"We have before come back from big gaps. Our problem was that the way our players performed in the first three quarters was not the way they played in the fourth. We had a problem on defense, where the players did not show heart. No one seemed to stop their man one-on-one. If players cannot stop players on defense, you have a problem."

Players

SHEFFER, DORON
Hapoel Galil Elyon
"I was able to contribute more than usual and I'm glad we won. The crowd was great for us as a team and for me personally. The win was very important morally and for our momentum. We've been playing better lately and I hope to keep improving."
