Besiktas Sompo too strong for Szolnoki

Besiktas Sompo Japan Istanbul remained among the Group E leaders after beating Szolnoki Olaj 76-67 on Wednesday evening. Nate Wolters led a balanced Besiktas attack with 15 points and 7 assists as his team improved to 3-1, which is good for second place in the group. Erik Murphy added 14 points and 7 rebounds, Engin Atsur scored 13 and Tremmell Darden 12 for Besiktas. Kyryl Natyazhko and David Vojvoda scored 14 each for Szolnoki, which fell to 0-4. Strahinja Milosevic added 11 points and Milos Borisov collected 13 rebounds in defeat.

Besiktas jumped in front on a Darden triple and a Wolters jumper. Vojvoda got Szolnoki on the scoreboard. Borisov and Natyazhko each scored twice to bring the visitors within 11-10. Murphy scored twice in a 6-0 spurt as Besiktas regained control. Murphy ended the quarter with a three-pointer that made it 22-15. Szolnoki drew within 3 thanks to Rodney Green, but Atsur hit a pair of triples and Cenk Akyol made another as Besiktas jumped ahead 33-21. Aaron Craft and Akos Keller fueled the Szolnoki attack, but Besiktas always seemed to have an answer. Vojvoda made it 39-31, however Besiktas answered with 7 straight points. The lead grew to 48-35 on D.J. Seeley free throws, but Vojvoda’s three-pointer made it 48-39 at the break.

Atsur scored half the points and Darden added a three-pointer in a 10-0 Besiktas run to start the second half. Despite a Milosevic basket-plus-foul and buckets by Natyazhko inside, the hosts remained comfortable ahead. Keller left Szolnoki with a fighting chance at 63-50 through three quarters. Borisov further cut the deficit to 11 to start the fourth quarter and Dino Gregory made it 67-57 with six minutes remaining. Murphy’s three and Wolters’s layup did not deflate Szolnoki, which got a triple from Krisztian Wittmann. Milosevic’s four-point play made it a 10-point difference with a minute to go, but it was too late for the visitors.

Head Coaches

ULUG, YAGIZER HAMDI
Besiktas Sompo Japan Istanbul
"To be back in Sinan Erdem Arena was a special feeling. We want to be strong both offensively and defensively, and to be a tough team to beat. We played the way we want to in the first half. Then our shooting percentage was relatively low in the second half, but overall I am proud of my players for the effort they gave the whole game."
POR, PETER
Szolnoki Olaj
"Overall we performed better compared to the last few games. They controlled the first half and later we tried to make a comeback from 20 points down. Every time we made a push to catch them, they found a way to escape and not let us too close. 22 turnovers is just too much against such a good team. I congratulate them for the win."

Players

MURPHY, ERIK
Besiktas Sompo Japan Istanbul
"We shared the ball very well in the first half and found lots of open shots. The second half we were not as good offensively and they tried hard for a comeback, but defensively we responded well. We want to keep winning games and today's game showed that we're on the right way."
WITTMANN, KRISZTIAN
Szolnoki Olaj
"We played really bad in the first half. Especially our defensive efforts paid off in the second half. But with that many turnovers, which resulted in easy baskets for them, it was hard to win that game. Congrats to our rivals."
