Mantzoukas, Promitheas beats ALBA for first win

U18 Promitheas Patras collected its first victory at the Euroleague Basketball Adidas Next Generation Tournament Munich as it held on for a thrilling 93-87 win over U18 ALBA Berlin in which Promitheas star Lefteris Mantzoukas broke the ANGT single-game scoring record with 49 points. Mantzoukas’ scoring output bested the previous mark of 43 points by Dragan Bender from December 2014 for U18 Maccabi Teddy Tel Aviv. Mantzoukas also picked up 19 rebounds, 1 assist, 3 steals and 1 block for a performance index ranking of 65, which also included him making a record 20 free throws of a record 23 foul shots taken. Christos Kafezas added 21 points and Athanasios Bazinas picked up 11 points, 5 rebounds, 8 assists and 4 steals. Promitheas almost wasted a 16-point lead in the final 7 minutes to improve to 1-1 in Group B. Christoph Tilly led ALBA with 22 points while Erik Penteker had 15 points, Hendrik Warner scored 13 points and Matus Sedlak picked up 11 points and 9 rebounds. With the loss, ALBA fell to 0-2 in the group.

Mantzoukas and Bazinas hit three-pointers to give Promitheas a 12-8 lead. Tilly had three straight baskets to make it 15-14 but Mantzoukas led a 9-0 surge for the first double-digit lead 24-14, which ALBA was able to get down to 24-21 after 10 minutes. Mantzoukas picked up the first 8 points of the second quarter and Promitheas’ margin grew to 32-23. The German side punched back and ended up moving ahead 41-43 and was leading 44-46 at halftime. Promitheas opened the second half with a 13-0 run with Kafezas scoring 7 points. Anton Quinkler did hit two three-pointers for ALBA but Mantzoukas was also on target twice from the outside as the lead was 73-58 after three quarters. Mantzoukas hit two free throws to make it 78-62 with 7:25 minutes left. ALBA was not ready to give up though, putting together a 6-19 run with 6 points from Tilly to pull within 84-81. Kafezas nailed a big three and then Mantzoukas hit all four of his free throws in the final 19 seconds to ice the win.
