Brescia use defense to surprise UNICS

Germani Brescia Leonessa used a strong defensive performance in starting its 7DAYS EuroCup campaign with an upset, defeating UNICS Kazan 84-75 at home in Group C. DeAndre Lansdowne paced the Italian side with 21 points, Luca Vitali collected 14 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists and Tyler Cain added 10 points, 6 rebounds and 4 assists. For UNICS, Jamar Smith came off the bench for 22 points, Errick McCollum tallied 16 points and Raymar Morgan picked up 12 points and 7 rebounds in the loss.

Brescia started strong on defense, giving up just a three-pointer by Evgeny Kolesnikov in building a 9-3 advantage, which was 13-5 midway through the first quarter. The hosts scored the final 5 points of the frame to lead 22-10. The margin was up to 26-12 when UNICS finally started to string together scores with Smith and Morgan both hitting threes in a 7-14 run to get within 33-26. Lansdowne answered with 5 straight points and the hosts led 43-29 at the break. Smith and Haukur Palsson both nailed three-pointers in helping UNICS get the deficit to 48-40. But the hosts got triples from Andrea Zerini, Lansdowne and Tommaso Laquintana in increasing the advantage to 61-45. The score was 61-50 after three quarters. McCollum’s three-pointer made it 64-57. Lansdowne answered at the other end and Brian Sacchetti followed with a three-ball for a 71-60 cushion. McCollum would not give up with a three-pointer and 2 free throws to get it to within 77-70. But Cain came up with a big dunk and Lansdowne’s steal and layup put the game out of reach at 81-70.

Pivotal performer

DeAndre Lansdowne came up with big shot after big shot - seemingly every time UNICS was trying to mount a comeback. He connected on 9 of 13 shots in scoring his 21 points while also collecting 2 rebounds, 2 assists and 1 steal and committing just 1 turnover in 28 minutes.

Another home win in the EuroCup

This is Brescia’s second season in the EuroCup and last season the team also picked up some big home victories - knocking off Crvena Zvezda mts Belgrade and Galatasaray Istanbul.

Telling numbers

Brescia turned the ball over just 6 times and did that while playing impressive defense in holding UNICS to just 42.3 percent on two-point shots. UNICS did not help itself by making just 14 of 25 free throws (56.0%).

Next games

Brescia will look to build on its big win as it heads to the road to take on Joventut Badalona on October 8. UNICS goes searching for a rebound performance when it hosts Cedevita Olimpija Ljubljana on October 9.

Head Coaches

ESPOSITO, VINCENZO
Germani Brescia Leonessa
"It's very important for the team. It's a good start to a great competition. Right after we won a game in Milan, we didn’t have enough energy, but the guys played so hard, especially on defense. And the offense looks much better. But it's just one step at a time. This team is growing. Now, we rest for 24 hours and we put our heads towards Brindisi [in the Italian League]."
PRIFTIS, DIMITRIS
UNICS Kazan
"Congratulations to Brescia, which played a really good game. It was expected to be strong. From the first quarter, we were not ready, while Brescia was. We balanced the score in the remaining three quarters, but it was not easy, because Brescia played in a very consistent way. It's just the first game for us, we will try to go on working hard."

Players

LANSDOWNE, DEANDRE
Germani Brescia Leonessa
"The EuroCup is a very strong league and that's a very good team. It says a lot about our team and how we are starting this year off. We still have a lot of things to work on, but you can see that our team can be very strong in beating a team like that. Every win is important and starting the EuroCup off with a win is very important for us. "
SMITH, JAMAR
UNICS Kazan
"Brescia played a very solid game from the first quarter. In the second and third quarters, I think we played better basketball, but the first quarter just hurt us. Brescia kept the lead. We just have to go back to the ground working, practicing hard and just get better."
