Galatasaray beats Barcelona for third straight home win

Galatasaray Odeabank Istanbul claimed its third win of the season with a convincing 78-64 victory at Abdi Ipekci Arena over FC Barcelona Lassa, which slipped to 4-5. Galatasaray’s offensive fluency was shown by the fact that it dished 25 assists, equalling a club record which was only set last week. Seven of those came from Sinan Guler, who also equalled a career-high with 18 points. Another big contribution came from Blake Schilb, who combined 18 points with 6 assists and 8 rebounds. Tibor Pleiss dominated the boards against his old team with 11 rebounds, while Vladimir Micov scored 15 points and Alex Tyus had 12. For Barcelona, only Tyrese Rice reached double figures in scoring with 22 points, while Joey Dorsey grabbed 10 rebounds.

The first quarter was close with neither team establishing a major advantage, and Barcelona finished the quarter with a long buzzer-beating triple from Rice to make it 17-16. A similar story continued in the second quarter, with the visitors taking a brief lead before 8 points in succession from Micov restored Galatasaray’s advantage, and with Schilb contributing steadily it was 39-35 at halftime. The home team enjoyed a 10-2 burst at the start of the second half before Rice scored 7 consecutive points to tighten it up, but Schilb and big baskets from Tyus capped another Galatasaray burst to make it 61-48 after three quarters. Rice tried to mount a comeback, but Guler’s triples maintained a solid margin for the home team, which finished strong and celebrated the victory.

Head Coaches

ATAMAN, ERGIN
Galatasaray Odeabank Istanbul
"We had a great game tonight, especially defensively. We worked very hard. On offense we played very smart; we always used our best attack. We did not make a turnover in the second half. And in the first half we also could have made this difference, but we made turnovers on fast breaks. We found a way to play a good defense with Tibor Pleiss and Emir Preldzic. We used switching man-to-man. And on offense we moved the ball very well tonight. I think Barcelona is not in their time. They lost three in a row, and we used it. Now we will fight in the EuroLeague until the end. It was a great atmosphere. Galatasaray fans are one of the best in Europe. They showed one more time tonight their support, and we gave them this victory. I hope we will continue, but we know we also have to win on the road."
BARTZOKAS, GEORGIOS
FC Barcelona Lassa
“Congratulations to Galatasaray, they deserved to win. We didn’t deserve to win with the way we played. They had 13 more rebounds than us, offensively they had 11 in the first half and we only had 11 in the whole game. With these kinds of numbers, what happened in the game is normal. We lost our confidence and we just reacted in the game.”

Players

SCHILB, BLAKE
Galatasaray Odeabank Istanbul
"We kept the same intensity all game. It is important for us. We had contributions left and right, from everybody on the team. Coach did a great job tonight of getting players in who were intense on the court. We stuck to the game plan. It was a big home win tonight. We just have to continue."
CLAVER, VICTOR
FC Barcelona Lassa
"Most of the game, even when we were trailing, we thought we could get a win, but they kept dominating the boards and that hurt us a lot. When you give a team so many second-chance opportunities, they punish you down the stretch. The good thing is that the team is together. We know we have played some tough games in recent weeks, with a tough schedule, but we want to be up there [in the standings] and will do anything we can to achieve that. My hand is okay, which is important. I was hoping to be with the team and try to help. It wasn't my best game, but I tried to help. I hope that when we are all back, the team can play the way we want."
DOELLMAN, JUSTIN
FC Barcelona Lassa
"It was definitely a very disappointing loss. It is a game that we came here to win and unfortunately, we didn't. Our mentality just wasn't there tonight. It is something we have to improve and hopefully we can learn from this, but we have to change our mentality, play a little more physical and see what happens. The season is very long, we have 21 games to go, but this is a game that we needed to win. Every win is important in this format, we have to understand that. We have to come out, play a little more physical and get a couple of wins. I feel good, still coming back. I am not 100% yet, but am able to help the team and be out on the court."
