Cedevita Zagreb lived to fight for a Last 16 berth at home by registering a commanding 73-84 road win that eliminated Hapoel Gilboa/Galil Elyon from Group D of the Eurocup on Tuesday in Gan-Ner, Israel. Cedevita improved to 3-2 and faces Azovmash at home in Zagreb next week for the final Last 16 berth from the group. Galil dropped to 1-4 and out of the Last 16 picture with its third straight home defeat. The good start was in favor of Galil, but a blitz by the visitors before the end of the first half put them on top by 6 points after 20 minutes. Galil never managed to take the lead back Marino Bazdaric led the winners with 17 points in a strong collective effort. Damjan Rudez added 16 for Cedevita, while Corsley Edwards finished with 15 and Dontaye Draper contributed 14. . Jack McClinton led the hosts with 15 points while Tyler Wilkerson added 12 with 8 rebounds.

Galil had the better start, using a big push from the home fans up to a 16-9 lead after good minutes by Dagan Yivzori and McClinton. Cedevita found its way back to the game but a dunk by Rodney Green kept the hosts on top and at the end of the first quarter the locals were up 23-18. An unsportsmanlike foul on Green allowed Cedevita to grab a momentum and soon the score was even at 33-33. A big three pointer by Bazdaric, who scored 12 points already in the first quarter, put the visitors on top and together with Edwards set the half court lead on 37-43 in favor of the road team.

Edwards with points at the rim and a jumper set the visitors' gap on 10, 39-49 but Yivzori stepped up with a long range shot and a reverse lay-up in the fast break to cut the margin back to only 7 after 25 minutes of basketball. Warren Carter hit a mid-range jumper before a rain of three pointers poured down from both ends with Green hitting from the corner for Galil yet Rudez and Bazdaric copied on the other side of court to make it 51-58 visitors. Last push by Galil brought the home side to just -4 at the end of the third quarter, 54-58 and still a big chance to capture the game in time. Carter with a big off balance fade away bucket inspired the fans but Rudez with another corner shot and a big weak side block kept his team safe above, 60-65 inside the last 6 minutes. Rudez was on fire and added another three pointer and after Draper stole in the open court Cedevita took a 60-71 gap with 4:32 to play in the game. Carter with a two hands slam tried to create a come back but Draper replied with an off-dribble three pointer that put a closure on the game.

LUBIN, LIOR
Hapoel Gilboa Galil
"We had good energies and started well but some of the problems we carry the entire year popped up again. They had much more possessions than us because we made turnovers and allowed offensive rebounds, and that hurt us a lot. We played with good energies and it covered for some of it, but not enough. We didn't shoot the ball well, even from the foul line, and in close games when you make so many shots it makes a difference."
PETROVIC, ALEKSANDAR
Cedevita Zagreb
"Before the game we knew Aris won so it was very important for us to win here, because we wanted to depend on ourselves in the last game. We knew Galil will have a strong start playing at home with a lot of energy, but we were ready for that. We learned from the first game when we made some mistakes and allowed them open shots, and tonight we were more ready. We controlled the rhythm of the game, and were on top of it. We're a bit tired but fortunately we were in focus and won the game."

GORDON, AVISHAI

"I'm very happy we had a good atmosphere in our gym today. The chapter in the Eurocup is over and we need to focus on the league. Making the Last 16 was one of our targets and we failed in that, but we need to recover from that. We had a good start, but something didn't work today and I can't put my finger on it. We'll go back to league routine now and try to make the best in that competition."
RUDEZ, DAMJAN
Cedevita Zagreb
"Hopefully I'll continue to shoot like I did today. We came from a tough loss in the Adriatic League, and I was afraid it'll have an effect of us, but we bounced back and showed great mental toughness. It's a very important game for us to win. Now we don't depend on anyone else but us. Galil is a very good team and they showed that in the first game, and also today in the first half, but we played very well and concentrated."
