Nepuntas Klaipeda picked up its first Eurocup victory of the season in Group H by knocking off Panionios Athens 91-86 on the road. Valdas Vasylius scored 12 of his 23 points in the final five minutes and combined with Marius Runkauskas (20 points) to make 18 of 22 free throws to pace Neptunas. All told, Klaipeda hit 10 of 12 free throws in the final 2:33 of the game to hold off Panionios. Vytautas Sarakauskas collected a double-double of 17 points and 12 rebounds and Edgaras Ulanovas chipped in 9 points and 10 rebounds for Klaipeda, which improved to 1-2 in the group. Uros Duvnjak led Panioios with 18 points while Kevin Langford scored 17 points and Errick McCollum had 16 points for Athens, which dropped to 2-1. Landon Milbourne and Vasileios Symtsak both scored 12 points for Panionios.

Vasylius hit for four points as Neptunas opened a 0-6 lead. Ioannis Athanasoulas scored Panionios’ first points at the 7:19 mark before Klaipeda used a 6-15 run to race out to an 8-21 cushion. McCollum scored four points as Panionios answered with a 10-0 run as the first quarter ended with Neptunas ahead 18-21. A Marc Carter triple tied the game at 25-25 and Duvnjak made it 27-25. Sarakauskas picked up five points as Klaipeda fought right back with a 2-9 run and Neptunas was ahead 43-44 at the break following three-balls from Vasylius and Runkauskas. The third quarter was a back-and-forth affair with seven lead changes and three ties. Runkauskas’ three-point play opened a five-point gap for Neptunas, 49-54. The guests were still leading 64-65 when Panionios closed the quarter with an 8-0 run to lead 72-65 going into the fourth. Athens was still ahead 74-67 when Neptunas reclaimed the lead thanks to an 11-0 run for a 74-78 scoreline. A Vasylius three-pointer pushed the gap to 76-81. The final five minutes was the Langford vs Vasylius show as Langford scored eight of Panionios’s final 12 points while Vasylius hit 12 of Neptunas’s final 16 points. But it was Klaipeda’s strong free throw shooting down the stretch – with 10 of 12 made attempts in the final 2:33 which decided the game.

Head Coaches

SFAIROPOULOS, IOANNIS
Panionios Athens
"It was a very bad defensive game from our side. We knew that Neptunas is a very good team offensively, but we didnʼt stop the high speed play of our opponent from our defense. In the last quarter Neptunas scored 26 points and it was very difficult to win."
MAKSVYTIS, KAZYS
Neptunas Klaipeda
"We are very happy because we beat the strongest team in the group. Before the game we had lot of problems with injuries. We lost the two first games in the last minute. This win will give us confidence."

Players

ATHANASOULAS, IOANNIS
Panionios Athens
" We were very bad defensively. Neptunas scored 91 points and we didnʼt have control of the game. "
VASYLIUS, VALDAS
Neptunas Klaipeda
"We are very happy that we won, because we lost the first two games in the end. Panionios played aggressive defense, but we made a high percentage of our shots and that helped us to win."
