CSKA tops Bamberg in Fridzon’s jumper at the buzzer

Vitaly Fridzon nailed a baseline jumper as time expired to lift CSKA Moscow to a thrilling 88-90 road win over Brose Bamberg on Thursday night. CSKA improved to a league-best 9-1 record, while Bamberg remains in the cellar at 2-8 after a fantastic game that saw Bamberg rally from a 19-point third quarter deficit and take a slim lead in the fourth quarter. But CSKA saw its magician Milos Teodosic hit 7 three-pointers and finish with 31 points along with 8 assists to lead it to victory. Teodosic had 15 of those points in the fourth quarter and Andrey Vorontsevich scored 15 on the night, including a key pair of free throws with 10.8 seconds left in the game. Fridzon and Kyle Hines finished with 9 points apiece. Nicolo Melli was spectacular for Bamberg with 26 points on 5-for-6 two-point shooting, 3-of-4 from downtown, and 7-for-8 from the foul line. Daniel Theis fought his way to 19 points and 9 rebounds, Fabien Causeur scored 12, and Janis Strelnieks 11 points in Bamberg’s fourth consecutive defeat.

Melli and Causeur hit back-to-back threes to open the scoring, but CSKA answered with a 0-10 run in which Teodosic hit his first three and Hines went for a coast-to-coast dunk. Teodosic passed 2,500 career points with a three from the corner that gave CSKA a 14-17 lead late in the first quarter, and Victor Khryapa strung together 6 points early in the second as CSKA did not allow a single basket for more than three minutes in opening a 16-24 margin. Bamberg got within a single possession behind Melli, but Teodosic fueled another CSKA run and then Higgins helped the visitors score the last 7 points of the second quarter and reach their first double-digit lead, 30-41 at halftime. CSKA opened the third quarter with back-to-back threes from Vorontsevich and Teodosic, and the visitors soon led 32-51. But Strelnieks hit a three and Miller and Melli made runners for Bamberg, which also saw Causeur and Miller hit threes in a 9-0 run that helped cut the deficit to 58-61 at the end of third quarter. After two more triples, one each from Melli and Zisis, it was Theis whose three-point play tied things at 67-67 with six minutes remaining. The teams traded blows and exchanged leads on almost every possession as the game went down to the wire. Fridzon had a three-point play, and Teodosic hit three triples down the stretch, but Bamberg had its answers in Melli, Causeur and Theis. The latter cut it 83-84 with 1:10 to go, before a series of free throws on both sides set the thrilling finish. With the score at 88-88 and 8.1 seconds to go, Teodosic took the ball and drove to the hoop, only for Theis to swat the shot out of bounds. But there was still 1.7 seconds left and Teodosic inbounded the ball finding Fridzon all alone on the right side. Fridzon hit nothing but the net from six meters out to give CSKA its ninth win of the season.

"We put together a great effort. I believe we played a great second half. We cut the number of turnovers from 14 in the first half, which was really awful and was our problem, to 2 in the second half. We had an opportunity to win against the EuroLeague champions. But I believe we had a lack of experience in the end, and when you play against such great players, such a great team, you need to try to go over the limit of what is your energy, what is your intensity, what is your understanding, concentration, ability to do the right thing in the right moment. That does not take away from the great second half, and effort. We came back, we took the lead, we played our basketball, we were ready to compete and fight. But in the end, I believe that it is really the details what is missing. The only way we can have these details is to learn. We have to accept what we lack, we have to understand what is the level and what requires to play at this level, and then you work on details. But first there is a psychological part that is acceptation of our lacks, and awareness of what is missing. As a coach, I have to be proud of the second half, how we play against the EuroLeague champs, but I am not blind and some things cost you the game. "

"Congratulations to my team for another road win. We are collecting victories, which is important in this marathon. Congrats to Bamberg. The outcome could have been different at the end, and that would have been fair, too. But we won. We were really good and dominant on both ends, offensively and defensively for two and a half quarters. We managed to force 16 turnovers to go with 11 steals, we played amazing defense. We expected Bamberg to try to play small-ball or play normal, but be aggressive. They hit 6 of 8 shots behind the arc for one stretch, if I am not mistaken. We had Teodosic who was hot, and we had 13 offensive rebounds. It was important that we won that battle, and chased and challenged most of the shots we missed. That was big. Bamberg has been in this situation many times this season, and the outcome was the same. They are a good team and play well. We have players that are absent, but more importantly we have players that are here, now, and they helped the team to another road win."

"It feels bad, but we are competing with everybody, so this is the way. We need to fix a couple of things. It’s always something different, but this is how we grow up. We are competing at the highest level; we are competing with everybody. Nobody is playing easy against us. We were down 15, we came back. We had a chance to go to overtime, not to win. This is a big difference. Move on. We have a game on Sunday, we are going to have a game next week. That’s it. We have to play with enthusiasm. We have to play knowing we are Bamberg with all that it means. With our pressure, knowing that we can make more mistakes than everybody; Our goal is really to compete with everybody. But when we arrive at the moment, we need two extra steps not only one. But I am really confident in this team, this group of guys. We have more gas in our tank to go through this season. "
HIGGINS, CORY
CSKA Moscow
"It was a hard fought game. I wish we wouldn’t have let them back in the game. We had a chance to take control in the third quarter, but we didn’t. We fought till the end. Guys stepped up and made big plays and Fridzon made a big shot at the end. "
HINES, KYLE
CSKA Moscow
"We had control of the game. Maybe we allowed them to score too much, but Bamberg, they came back and made some shots. They capitalized on some of our mistakes. But we made enough plays; Vitaly had a big play at the end. Milos played really big down the stretch. We just made enough plays to win the game. "
TEODOSIC, MILOS
CSKA Moscow
"In the end we were the luckier team. We were up 19 points in the third quarter, and in three minutes we lost that advantage. We cannot play like we did in the third quarter, because it almost cost us the win tonight."
