Nunnally lifts Fenerbahce over Madrid in thriller

Fenerbahce Istanbul moved into second place in the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague after a thrilling 78-77 victory over Real Madrid on Thursday at Fenerbahce Ulker Sports Arena. James Nunnally had his best game yet in a Fenerbahce uniform with 18 points, including a free throw with 1.7 seconds left that decided the game. The result left both teams with 7-3 records and marked Fenerbahce’s fourth straight win against Madrid. The loss snapped Madrid’s three-game winning streak. Nunnally led six Fenerbahce scorers in double figures: Ekpe Udoh posted 14 points and 10 rebounds, Jan Vesely and Kostas Sloukas added 11 points apiece and Nikola Kalinic and Bobby Dixon each scored 10. Sloukas and Dixon both dished 6 assists, too. Anthony Randolph fueled Madrid in the fourth quarter and finished with 16 points on perfect shooting and Sergio Llull tallied 14 points and 8 assists, but was also 0 for 6 from downtown. Centers Othello Hunter and Gustavo Ayon collected 12 points each for Los Blancos and Jonas Maciulis added 10.

Making just his third start of the season, Nunnally came out hot with half of his teams points as the hosts jumped to a 14-11 lead. Nunnally added a fantastic alley-oop and Kalinic finished in transition to extend the margin, but a Rudy Fernandez triple in the waning seconds of the first quarter made it 23-19. Vesely got it going inside with a basket-plus-foul to make it 30-23, but the visitors came right back with 9 straight points and took the lead on a finger roll by Llull. Sloukas put Fenerbahce back on top, but Hunter was a wrecking ball inside for Madrid and the teams traded the lead several times. Nunnaly’s three-point bank shot from midcourt was ruled to be after the halftime buzzer and left Madrid holding a 39-40 advantage at the break. The game intensified in the third quarter, but neither team could pull away. Udoh’s jumper in the lane tied it again at 57-57 through three quarters. The lead changed hands on the first three baskets of the fourth quarter. Luigi Datome’s fast break layup made it 64-60 and triggered a Madrid timeout. Randolph got going and scored Madrid’s next 11 points to tie it at 71-71 with five minutes remaining. The hosts went back ahead on Nunnally’s third three, however Randolph hit a contested jumper to make it 74-75. Sloukas fouled out with 2:30 remaining and the game came down the wire. After Dixon tied the game at 77-77 with 16.8 seconds to go, Madrid turned to Llull, but the MVP for November missed the jumper and Jaycee Carroll fouled Nunnally on the rebound. Nunnally made the first free throw with 1.7 seconds left and intentionally missed the second to take the victory 78-77.

"I am happy for these [fans], first or all. They give the team energy. It was a very tough and very difficult game. We beat an excellent team. It was decided on the last defense, even if in some moments we turned the ball over so much. Anyhow, Real Madrid is Real Madrid. On more time, we had an excellent atmosphere here and I want to thank our fans. When we are all together, anything is possible. "

"It was a very tough and very emotional game. Many times it happened that we took an advantage and they came back, or the opposite situation. We went 4 points up, but they always found a way back. And in a game like that, of course small details decide the game. We played good on the last defense and finally we protected our rebounds and that defensive rebounds won the game. If you look at the statistics, we shot less shots from two-points and three points, but we scored more. Turnovers, 12, some were really unnecessary, but this is basketball…. I don’t like really to talk about some problems, but on our teams, two very important players are out, Bogdan [Bogdanovic] and Pero [Antic]; it’s not so easy. But in this situation my players fought from the first seconds to the last seconds. It was a very important detail for us. James Nunnally was excellent today; today he played his best game in the time that he is here. "

LASO, PABLO
Real Madrid
"I think it was a very tough game for both teams, very solid. Not a lot of difference in the score. No one could make a run and it was tied until the last ball. We can leave here with two sensations. One – we played solid and we could have won this game. Or second - we lost a game that we had in our hands. For me right now in December, it’s a good lesson for the future knowing that it was a very difficult game and we played solid and we did a lot of good things, but not good enough to win. If we continue this way, we are able to compete against anyone. Fenerbahce is a very good team and they got the victory. "

"It feels good to win. We always gotta win at home and that’s the goal of every game. Win at home, protect the home court. My teammates found me in the right spot; I just knocked down the shot. That’s it. "
FERNANDEZ, RUDY
Real Madrid
"We played with a lot of attitude and fight. I think we planned the game well. We fought against a great team. We leave disappointed at having lost that way, but also satisfied that we played a very good game, I think."
