Gran Canaria beats Nizhny again, keeps first place

Herbalife Gran Canaria improved to 5-1 in the 7DAYS EuroCup by downing Nizhny Novgorod 98-87 at home on Wednesday. Gran Canaria had already qualified to the Top 16 before the game; Nizhny dropped to 2-3 and will fight with MZT Skopje Aerodom for the only available spot left from Group A. Kyle Kuric led the winners with 18 points on 4-of-5 three-point shooting. Sasu Salin and Pablo Aguilar each added 14 points, while Bo McCalebb had 12 for Gran Canaria. Kenneth Boynton led Nizhny with 19 points, Ivan Strebkov added 18, DeAndre Kane 13 while Siim-Sander Vene got 10 for the guests. Gran Canaria had excellent shooting percentages, 61.4% (27 of 44) inside the arc and 41.4% (12 of 29) from downtown. Gran Canaria had 21 assists and picked up just 9 turnovers; Nizhny had 13 assists and 13 turnovers. Gran Canaria also locked down the defensive glass really well, only allowing Nizhny to grab 5 offensive rebounds.

Early three-pointers by Albert Oliver and Salin gave Gran Canaria an 8-3 lead. Strebkov stepped up for Nizhny and triples by Kane and Petr Gubanov gave the guests their first lead, 10-13. Xavi Rabaseda joined the three-point shootout and got help from Anzejs Pasecniks and Aguilar to put Gran Canaria back ahead, 20-17, after 10 minutes. Back-to-back baskets by McCalebb and a three-pointer by Kuric kept Gran Canaria ahead, 27-23, early in the second quarter. A jumper by Rabaseda and a dunk by Aguilar forced Nizhny to call timeout at 31-25. Strebkov and Vene fueled a 1-8 run that put Nizhny back ahead, 32-33. Oliver and Pasecniks rescued Gran Canaria and Oriol Pauli soon gave the hosts a 41-37 cushion, which Boynton cut to 43-41 at halftime. McCalebb kept pushing Gran Canaria after the break and Salin hit a triple for a 48-43 lead. Kane buried a three-pointer and Boynton added a layup-plus-foul, igniting a 0-8 run, which he capped with a driving layup for 52-54 Nizhny lead. Salin rescued Gran Canaria with back-to-back bombs from downtown, but Vene and Ingus Jakovics answered from beyond the arc to cause Nizhny to regain the lead, 60-61. Hendrix scored down low and three-pointers by Aguilar and Kuric - at the buzzer - fixed the score at 70-67 after 30 minutes. Hendrix and Kuric boosted the hosts' lead to 75-69 early in the fourth quarter. Boynton struck from downtown but Kuric, McCalebb and Royce O'Neale led a 13-0 run that sealed the outcome at 88-72.

Head Coaches

CASIMIRO, LUIS
Herbalife Gran Canaria Las Palmas
“Nizhny Novgorod have all my respect for their work here today. They have proven that they are playing much better than in the first game and with good shooting percentages. We had difficulties on defense at the beginning. In the second half we improved a lot, and in the last quarter we made the big step to achieve a good lead."

Players

KURIC, KYLE
Herbalife Gran Canaria Las Palmas
“We had a bad defense in the first half and that increased the confidence of our rival. They also played much better than in Russia with new players. But at the end, we were able to improve in the second half and win the game."
