Efes hands ASVEL first home defeat

Anadolu Efes Istanbul handed LDLC ASVEL Villeurbanne its first home loss in the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague by prevailing in an 84-90 battle in France. The 2019 runner-up collected its third win in a row to move to 7-2 thanks to 19 points from Shane Larkin. Vasilije Micic and Rodrigue Beaubois both tallied 16 points, Sertac Sanli added 15 and Tibor Pleiss chipped in 11 points. ASVEL saw its modest two-game winning streak end in falling to 5-4. Jordan Taylor, Tonye Jekiri and Livio Jean-Charles all scored 12 points and Theo Maledon had 10 in defeat.

Jekiri started in great form with 6 points in helping ASVEL jump ahead 8-2. Micic and Beaubois responded with back-to-back triples to knot the game with Pleiss and Sanli both converting three-point plays ahead of another Micic bomb for a 12-19 advantage. Teenager Maledon scored 5 points and Jean-Charles knocked down a three-pointer to get the hosts within 22-23. It was 22-25 after 10 minutes. Another ASVEL teenager Matthew Strazel knotted the game at 27-27 with a three-pointer early in the second quarter with Larkin and Alec Peters answering with triples at the other end as Efes went up 29-35. Beaubois and Pleiss combined for 9 points to keep Efes ahead 38-44, but the hosts punched back with 7 straight points - including a blocked shot and three-pointer from Jean-Charles to nose ahead 45-44. Efes led 45-46 at the break. Free throws at both ends sent the lead back and forth early on in the second half, though Chris Singleton hit a three-pointer and Sanli scored two baskets in helping Efes move ahead 53-61. Taylor responded with a triple and Charles Kahudi drained 2 triples to get ASVEL within 62-63. Larkin converted his eighth free throw of the quarter and two Sanli foul shots left Efes up 65-70 - and it was 66-70 after 30 minutes. Maledon continued his outstanding game with a three-point play to push ASVEL back into the lead 71-70 early in the fourth quarter. Efes's response once again included three-pointers with Beaubois and Singleton both hitting from outside in a 2-12 surge over 5 minutes as the advantage grew to 73-82. Veteran leaders Larkin and Micic increased the cushion to 77-88 with less than 2 minutes to play and the game was decided.

Head Coaches

MITROVIC, ZVEZDAN
LDLC ASVEL Villeurbanne
"This was our best offensive performance in the EuroLeague this year and I think it was a great game. Maybe it was different than the games before but when you play against maybe the most talented offensive team in Europe and the second-ranked team in Europe, it is very difficult. It was really great. It was a priceless experience for all my guys to play against a team like this."
ATAMAN, ERGIN
Anadolu Efes Istanbul
"It was a very important victory if you think that the four teams before us all lost here. ASVEL really hustled to try to win the game, but we played really smart and got a great contribution from Sertac Sanli because we missed [Bryant] Dunston. And our guards - Larkin, Micic and Beaubois - gave us scoring and we controlled the game in the last quarter. So it was a very important victory."

Players

JEAN-CHARLES, LIVIO
LDLC ASVEL Villeurbanne
"We made efforts on Micic and Larkin, but it was very hard to defend them. Not lose at home was important for us, for our fans too. This loss is not the end of the world, we’ll go back to work for the next game."
MALEDON, THEO
LDLC ASVEL Villeurbanne
"We are frustrated because we want more and more, that’s our team mentality. We have to keep our heads up right now because another fight is in front of us with Fenerbahce. They played at their rhythm offensively, took a lot of offensive rebounds, and I think we have to do better on defense. 47 points conceded in the first half is too much for us."
MICIC, VASILIJE
Anadolu Efes Istanbul
"The most important thing today was the victory. We knew that we had a double week of games this week and for this type of game it’s not important how you play, just that you win. They won all their games here against tough opponents. We knew that and I think we responded well all the way to the end of the game. They are a good team and I’m happy that we played this way today."
LARKIN, SHANE
Anadolu Efes Istanbul
"We’re the first team to be able to come in here and get a win. They’re obviously a great team at home. So it’s a big win for us to come in here and start our two-game road stretch with a big win. In the second half, we really locked in defensively. In the first half, we were taking a lot of threes and they were getting out in transition and scoring a lot of their points in transition. In the second half, we really tried to attack the basket, draw fouls and just try to slow the game down and play at our pace. That’s what we did and that’s what broke the game."
