Peters enjoys career night as Baskonia blasts Fenerbahce

TD Systems Baskonia Vitoria-Gasteiz recovered from a slow start to blast Fenerbahce Beko Istanbul 86-68 at Fernando Buesa Arena on Tuesday. Fenerbahce raced into a 0-9 early advantage, but it was nearly all Baskonia the rest of the way. The home team moved ahead early in the second quarter and didn’t look back, establishing a double-digit lead after the break and staying in front the rest of the way, pulling clear for a big win in the final quarter. Alec Peters led the way with a career-high 25 points on 10-of-12 field goal shooting plus 7 rebounds. Rokas Giedraitis added 19 points, Zoran Dragic scored 16, Luca Vildoza had 11 and Pierria Henry dished 10 assists. Jan Vesely paced Fenerbahce with 15 points, with Kenan Sipahi (11), Dyshawn Pierre (11) and Lorenzo Brown (10) also scoring in double figures. Baskonia improved to 3-4 and Fenerbahce fell to 4-5.

Vesely and Danilo Barthel scored inside to send Fenerbahce ahead early and Brown’s floater followed by Ali Muhammed's triple made it 0-9. Four points from Youssoupha Fall got Baskonia moving and Peters dunked to make it 7-11. Vesely’s three-point play and Brown’s steal and score kept the visiting team ahead despite triples from Dragic and Vildoza. A Brown-to-Vesely alley-oop made it 13-19. Vildoza netted from deep before Peters and Dragic made it even closer, 20-21 at the end of the first quarter. Ahmet Duverioglu opened the second quarter scoring from under the basket, but Dragic tied it from deep and Giedraitis gave Baskonia its first lead, 26-23, with a layup-and-one. Peters hit from the corner and Dragic delivered a layup to stretch the lead before Jarell Eddie’s three-point play rescued Fenerbahce. Two more scores from Peters made it 37-28 and 5 points from Giedraitis protected the lead. Henry’s lob briefly made it a double-digit lead, but Pierre hit back with a three-point play to make it 45-36 at halftime.

Vesely opened the second half with an alley-oop, but Vildoza struck from deep for a double-digit lead, 48-38. Vesely scored again, but Giedraitis netted another triple and Achille Polonara scored from close-range. Muhammed scored 5 points in a row and Sipahi struck from long-range to complete a 0-8 run. Peters settled Baskonia and reestablished a double-digit lead with a pair of threes, but Sipahi’s three-point play and Pierre’s corner triple boosted Fenerbahce. Brown scored in transition and Sipahi made another layup-and-one to make it 60-59 after a 1-11 run. Giedraitis and Vildoza extended the lead to 64-59 with 10 minutes left and it would never be close again. Tonye Jekiri’s layup stretched the lead at the start of the fourth and Johnny Hamilton’s putback slam was canceled out by Jekiri’s open dunk. Henry’s driving layup made it 70-61, and Peters struck from deep for another double-digit lead. Another Peters score made it 75-61 on a 9-0 run. Giedraitis hit another triple to remove any doubt and Baskonia cruised the rest of the way.

Baskonia recovers from horror start

Baskonia missed its first 10 shots, including 4 from the foul line. Six different players were responsible for those misses as the home team needed nearly 4 minutes to score its first points. But Baskonia then made 10 of its next 12 shots, scoring 20 points in 5 minutes to get back into the game.

Ball movement sparks host

A key to the home team’s offensive production was excellent ball movement, totaling 28 assists – the joint-third best in club history. Pierria Henry led the way with 10 assists, while Tadas Sedekerskis had 5 in less than 10 minutes on the floor.

Losing run ended

Baskonia’s win ended a five-game losing streak against Fenerbahce, a sequence dating back to the 2018 playoffs. The 16-point margin was Baskonia’s biggest over the Turkish team in four years.

Sipahi solid on second debut

One bright spot for Fenerbahce was a solid second debut for Kenan Sipahi, who made his first EuroLeague appearance for the club since 2015. He had 11 points, 1 assist and 2 steals in 13 minutes on the floor.

Next round

Baskonia stays at home to welcome Panathinaikos OPAP Athens on Thursday, while Fenerbahce also remains in Spain for a trip to Real Madrid on Friday.

Head Coaches

IVANOVIC, DUSKO
TD Systems Baskonia Vitoria-Gasteiz
"I think it’s a very important victory. In the second half, we had a little period with a bad game, not moving on offense and losing some balls, but finally I think we controlled the game very good. This is EuroLeague; we don’t have time to think about this game, now we think about the next one. In this job, you must have patience and believe in what you do. Sometimes you lose and sometimes you win, but the important thing is continuity and believing in what you do.”
KOKOSKOV, IGOR
Fenerbahce Beko Istanbul
“We couldn’t close the game. We came to compete and fight, but this is a very strong and physical team and we have to play for 40 minutes on a high level to match that intensity and aggressiveness to keep ourselves close. It was a one-possession game but then they pressed the pedal, made the run and we were never able to recover. We’re not super-athletic or super-fast, so we have to be super-efficient. We have to give our best to have a chance of winning games.”

Players

GIEDRAITIS, ROKAS
TD Systems Baskonia Vitoria-Gasteiz
"It’s a good victory because we lost two or three in a row and we wanted to step up. Our energy was good, we played good on offense and defense, we shared the ball and I think that’s the key."
PETERS, ALEC
TD Systems Baskonia Vitoria-Gasteiz
"It’s a team win. This game is about playing as a team and we did a really good job. We had things going on offense, it took us a bit to get going, but once we got our rhythm it worked really well for us. They made their run in the third quarter, but at the start of the fourth we were really patient, got the shots we wanted and did a good job of not turning the ball over as much."
