Khimki Moscow made a big step forward to a possible elimination rounds qualification from Group C by topping Telindus Oostende 90-75 at home on Tuesday. Khimki raised its record to 4-3 and is now tied for second place in Group C with Lukoil Academic. Oostende dropped to 2-5 at the bottom of the Group B table with its hopes to advance to the next round reduced a lot. Khimki used a lethal 25-6 run bridging the second and third quarters to take over the game at 58-38 and then control the match till the final buzzer. Kelly McCarty led the way by nailing 8 of 12 two-point shots on his way to 24 points for Khimki. Ruben Wolkowyski added 15, Valeri Fridzon and Osar Torres chipped in 12 apiece, while Vladimir Veremeenko grabbed 9 rebounds. Rashad Wright of Oostende led his team with 24 points while downing 4 of 5 shots from downtown. Vanja Plisnic posted 18 points and 8 rebounds and Eric Hicks 10 points for the visitors.

Denis Wucherer opened the scoring for the guests, before Fridzon did so for Khimki and pushed the hosts up 7-4 with free throws. Wright tied it 7-7 from downtown before Khimki exploded with an 8-2 run with half those points scored by McCarty to take a 17-10 margin. After an Oostende timeout, Wucherer scored posting up, but McCarty answered with 4 more points to make it 21-12. Oostende answered with a strong 2-11 game-tying run capped with a mid-range jumper from Wright and a basket by Hicks that made it 23-23. Point guard Gianmarco Pozzecco stepped up for the hosts with a pair of free throws and Oscar Torres found easy points in the open court to make it 27-23. Lavor Postell hit a three-pointer for Oostende, but Torres kept Khimki in front 31-26. Still, the Oostende shooters were hot as Plisnic and Postell buried back-to-back triples to pull their team within 33-32. Pozzecco stayed in charge for Khimki, nailing a three-pointer, and Wolkowyski added 4 consecutive points in a 9-0 run to establish the game's first double-figure lead, 42-32. But that run wasn't over, because Melvin Booker and McCarty added consecutive bombs to it, leaving Khimki in front 48-32 at halftime.

Khimki came back from the lockers to keep its amazing run going strong with a 10-3 blast that put the game out of reach at 58-38. Hicks tried to answer for Oostende, and with help from Wright reduced the margin to 60-45. But as the Belgian visitors tried to come back, Veremeenko from downtown and Maciej Lampe from the foul line re-established Khimki's 20-point cushion at 66-46. The third quarter ended with a layup by Boris Gorenc that fixed a 72-52 score after 30 minutes. The last quarter saw both teams exchange baskets - mostly Plisnic for Oostende and Torres for the hosts - while the difference remained around 20 points. McCarty and Wright answered each other from beyond the arc midway through the quarter, but the best Oostende could do was cut the difference to 84-67 on a basket by Plisnic before Khimki pushed the gap again to 89-67 again McCarty free throws.

ELEVICH, SERGEY
Khimki
"We remembered our previous game in Oostende, we couldn’t forget what a shame it was to lose there, so we desired a revenge. My players were more concentrated today comparing with the match in Belgium. Our guests have a new coach, Sharon Drucker, whom I know pretty well, I am acquainted with his basketball philosophy. But today Sharon's team didn't meet my expectations; they played in a bit different way than I thought they would. Oostende defense and rebounding was on the level. But I am more than satisfied with my players – they were at both sides of the flour. We used Podkolzin only for three minutes because I didn’t want to make any drastic changes; we needed to win with a larger cut than we lost in Belgium."
DRUCKER, SHARON
Oostende
"Khimki is a very deep team, with a lot of great players waiting to come up from the bench and bring their high energy and effort to the game. The Russian club is surely one of the top candidates to win the ULEB Cup. We started normally today, but lost our confidence at the end of the second quarter. Khimki ran away and we could do nothing about that. We came to consciousness only in the fourth quarter, when everything was over for us. We are coming to every city wanting to win. But we rarely give the right message. I mean, not showing our plans on the floor during all the game. It costs us. We still have a slight chance to qualify and will do everything to win in Berlin next week."

Players

GORENC, BORIS
Khimki
"I think we started playing very good team defense in the last three games. It changes everything. We have so many stars; everybody can score a lot every night, so offense wasn't a problem. So now we put all the pieces together. Oostende is very dangerous from outside. If you let them shoot, they will do it easily. We have already faced that trouble in Belgium. So we concentrated on not allowing them to repeat it. McCarty, Wolkowysky, Fridzon – they all had a good game today. But the most important – it was a team effort and that’s the right way to win championships."
