A free throw by Laurent Pluvy sealed the first win in the ULEB Cup for Chalon at Estudiantes on Tuesday, 76-78, which also meant the first loss for the hosts in an official competition this season. In the first two quarters, Estudiantes managed to contain the guests, who in the second half bounced back to win. Casey Calvary ruined the night to the hosts with his 33 points. This first Group C win puts Chalon on track with 1-0 and Estudiantes stays at the bottom with 0-1.
Since tip off, Chalon dominated the game in the paint to jump ahead. Estudiantes kept missing easy shots while the rivals scored every time they approached the basket. Udonis Haslem was the other offensive weapon for the guests, and 7 straight turnovers for the hosts gave confidence back to Chalon, who was leading 15-20. At halftime, 31 of the 44 points of the guests had been scored by Calvary and Haslem. A 0-8 run for Chalon two minutes before the break, increased the lead to 12 points, 30-42. Only Corey Brewer could keep the rhythm for the hosts with 9 points during the first 20 minutes, but Chalon was already leading by 35-44 at halftime.
The reply from the hosts arrived at the beginning of the third quarter. A 6-0 tear put Estudiantes back in the game, but once more, Chalon reacted to get its maximum lead after a three by Calvary, 48-60 in minute 27. Brewer, still the best man for the Spaniards, nailed two threes midway through the third quarter, and combined with a 2-3 zone defense, Estudiantes not only neutralized the lead, but also jumped ahead at 70-67 at the same time that Calvary was fouled out in minute 37. But Chalon, in another offensive display, converted two consecutive offensive plays to regain control of the score, to seal the win with the free throws, when Nacho Azofra had given tha last traces of hope to the fans with 76-77.
