Jelovac, Norel lead CAI to comfortable home win

CAI Zaragoza had a strong start of the Eurocup regular season by downing Proximus Spirou Charleroi 80-70 at home in Group C on Wednesday. Stefan Jelovac led the winners with 19 points. Henk Norel added 15, Robin Benzing had 11 while Halil Kanacevic got 10 for CAI. Billy Baron led Spirou with 36 points. Kevin Tumba added 14 and 10 rebounds while Justin Hamilton had 10 points for the guests. CAI led 17-7 early but Spirou cut its deficit to 19-12 after 10 minutes and then again to 33-32 a minute before halftime. Kanacevic allowed CAI to get a 37-32 edge at the break. Drake Diener and Benzing fueled a 12-2 run that put CAI in charge for good. The hosts led 58-51 after 30 minutes and extended their margin to 75-60 to cruise to a well-deserved win.

Baron and Tumba shined early but Norel, Jelovac and Diener allowed CAI to get an 11-5 lead after 4 minutes. Tumba scored again but Jelovac struck from downtown and Norel added a layup-plus-foul to make it a double-digit game, 17-7. A three-pointer by Hamilton and a jumper by Baron allowed Spirou to get a bit closer, 19-12, at the end of the first quarter. Seamus Boxley found his first points early in the second quarter and Tumba brought Spirou within 21-16. Benzing tried to change things with a three-pointer which Norel followed with another basket to restore a 26-16 CAI lead. Hamilton scored again, Baron added another basket and free throws by Pavel Pumprla kept Spirou within 28-22. Baron soon followed a three-pointer with free throws for a 30-27 Spirou deficit. Another triple by Baron made it a one-point game, 33-32, but Kanacevic allowed CAI to keep a 37-32 edge at halftime.

Baron kept pacing Spirou with back-to-back baskets after the break but a three-pointer by Tomas Bellas and another basket by Norel kept CAI way ahead, 44-36. Norel scored again and Diener added another basket to restore a double-digit CAI lead, 48-38. Bellas hit a jumper and Nate Linhart found Norel for another basket that broke the game open, 52-38, after a 12-2 run. Baron kept scoring fluently but didn't find much help around. Meanwhile, an outstanding Jelovac boosted the hosts' lead to 58-46. Baron and Tumba combined for all points in a 0-7 run that gave Spirou some fresh air, 58-51, after 30 minutes. Benzing buried a triple early in the fourth quarter and Kanacevic gave CAI a 63-51 margin. Hamilton and Pumprla stepped up for Spirou but a red hot Benzing and Isaac Fotu kept CAI way ahead, 70-58. Fotu shined with a three-point play and free throws by Bellas sealed the outcome, 75-60, as Spirou never recovered.

Head Coaches

RUIZ, JOAQUIN
CAI Zaragoza
"I am happy to start the Eurocup with a home win, which is what mattered. In the first quarter, we did really well against their man-to-man defense. Spirou tried a zone defense, which gave us trouble, as we haven't worked that much against it so early in the season. We played against their zone defense much better in the second half, getting our big men involved. Our three-point shooting percentage was not the best, but we found good shots. I can only be happy, my team bounced back and played with patience."
STAS, JACQUES
Proximus Spirou Charleroi
"We knew it would be a tough game for us. We don’t want excuses, but we have four players injured. It was quite difficult to come with some juniors on the team. Still, we fought through, we gave our best on the court. I believe with our full squad it will be a different game, and I hope this result will give us hope for the game in Charleroi when we play again."

Players

NOREL, HENK
CAI Zaragoza
"We won, that is most important, and we did it with good team spirit. I am a little bit worried about Sek [Henry], but I hope he will be OK. We won at home, which is what we have to do. We prepared the game well and I felt very comfortable on the court, just as Steve [Jelovac], Halil [Kanacevic] and Isaac [Fotu]. We had a chance. The many passes between the big men show our team's philosophy - this is how I like to play basketball, finding the extra pass to get the best shot possible. We are practicing that and I am happy to pass the ball like that. This way, many players are happy."
BARON, BILLY
Proximus Spirou Charleroi
" It was a hard-fought game. We battled all 40 minutes. Coach was talking to us about playing the right way. I think we showed a lot of pride today. No one wants to lose, the way we fought is something we can be proud about. We missed a lot of shots, we are not going to make any excuses, we miss a lot of guys due to injuries, and some other guys need step up, but we fought really hard, so it is something to be proud of and we need to keep moving forward."
