Travis Diener - Banco di Sardegna Sassari - EC12 (Photo: dinamobasket.com)Dinamo Banco di Sardegna Sassari improved its chances to reach the Eurocup Last 16 in Group H by downing Cajasol Seville 76-85 in Spain on Wednesday. Both teams tie for second place in Group H, each with a 2-3 record, but Sassari is second due to its tie-break advantage against Cajasol. Sassari will reach the Last 16 if it beats Orleans Loiret Basket next week or if Cajasol loses against Group H champion Crvena Zvezda Diva Belgrade. Drake Diener paced the winners with 31 points on 7-of-9 three-point shots. Bootsy Thornton added 21 while Travis Diener had a double-double of 11 points and 10 assists for Sassari. Latavious Williams and Brian Asbury led Cajasol with 16 points apiece. Williams added 12 rebounds for a double-double. Tomas Satoransky had 13 points while Milenko Tepic and Luka Bogdanovic each got 10 for the hosts. Three-pointers by the Diener cousins and Thornton allowed Sassari to get an early 5-14 lead. Asbury and Satoransky kept Cajasol within 18-23 late in the first quarter. Drake Diener and Thornton fueled a 0-15 run that broke the game open, 18-38. Sassari kept a 31-47 margin at halftime. Nothing changed in the second half, as Sassari managed to keep a double-digit lead almost all the way until the final buzzer.

Thornton and Drake Diener got Sassari going with back-to-back three-pointers. Satoransky and Asbury answered with consecutive driving layups to keep Cajasol within 4-6. Tepic split free throws but Travis Diener and Thornton combined for all points a 0-8 run that gave Sassari a 5-14 lead. Satoransky kept pacing Cajasol with a layup-plus-foul that Asbury followed with a mid-range jumper. Tony Easley and Drake Diener shined with consecutive baskets for a 10-18 Sassari edge. Satoransky scored in transition but Drake Diener bettered that with a triple. Bogdanovic nailed a long jumper and Asbury added foul shots but Giacomo DeVecchi buried a six-meter shot to keep Sassari way ahead, 16-23. Williams dunked it and Thornton made free throws for a 18-25 Sassari edge after 10 minutes. Drake Diener and DeVecchi shined with fast break layups early in the second quarter to boost the guests' lead to 18-31. Cajasol went scoreless for more than 5 minutes while a layup by Mauro Pinton and a jumper by Drake Diener broke the game open, 18-35. A three-pointer by Thornton capped a 0-15 run, as Asbury hit a close jumper for a 20-38 score. Michal Ignerski nailed a running hook and free throws by Thornton made it a 22-point game, 20-42. Ondrej Balvin and Williams slammed it but a three-point play by Manuel Vanuzzo made it 24-45. Tepic, Williams and Balvin fueled a 7-0 Cajasol run but an off-balance jumper by Drake Diener fixed the halftime score at 31-47.

Asbury scored in transition right after the break that Drake Diener bettered with a catch-and-shoot triple for a 33-50 Sassari lead. Williams made free throws that Asbury followed with a running jumper to give Cajasol hope at 37-50. Travis Diener found his cousin Drake for a triple, and quickly repeated that to boost Sassari's lead to 37-56. Williams and Thornton traded foul shots and a layup by John Holland brought Cajasol within 41-59. Williams dunked it to force Sassari to call timeout at 43-59. Asbury hit free throws and fed Bogdanovic for a layup that brought the hosts a bit closer, 47-59. Drake Diener rescued Sassari with his sixth triple but a jumper by Bogdanovic kept the hosts within 49-62 after 30 minutes. Bogdanovic hit a jumper early in the fourth quarter and even when Thornton scored down low, Asbury brought the hosts as close as 53-64 right before fouling out. Travis Diener hit a jumper that Holland bettered with a three-pointer for a 56-66 score with 7 minutes left. Ignerksi followed a jumper with free throws and even when Williams shined with a three-point play, Easley dunked it for a 59-72 score. Drake Diener buried his seventh triple but Satoransky, Williams and Holland brought Cajasol within single digits, 66-75, but it was already too little, too late for the hosts.

Head Coaches

GARCIA RENESES, AITO
Cajasol Seville
"We know it is a very difficult to advance to the Last 16 because Sassari has a very good team. They know how to play and chose excellent shots. In the Italian League this team is in second place. They are a very high level for us. We did not defend at the level to beat great teams. The win would have been good for our self-esteem, and this is the worst thing."
SACCHETTI, ROMEO
Dinamo Banco di Sardegna Sassari
"We played very good defense and offense and made easy shoots. At the end of the first half, we had a lot of turnovers and we couldn’t break the game. In the second half, Cajasol played good defense. So a pair of three-point shots by Travis and Drake Diener broke the game. If we want to get the classification to the Last 16, we have to beat Orleans and it will be very difficult. We have one player, Thornton, with problems in one finger and we don’t know if he will play."

Players

BOGDANOVIC, LUKA
Cajasol Seville
"We had a bad time in the beginning of the match. They played very hard and took an advantage in the score. Banco Sardegna Sassari showed a lot of intensity and went 10 points up. But in the second half, Cajasol played much harder on defense and fought for the win, but it is very difficult when the opponent knows how to play."
DIENER, DRAKE
Dinamo Banco di Sardegna Sassari
"We played very good defense, we dominated the defensive rebounds and we moved the ball the right way. We won because we defended well and we knew to choose our shoots. In the second half, Cajasol played harder and It was more difficult for us, so our pressure helped us win."
