Unicaja easies over Buducnost and into Top 16

Unicaja Malaga hit 15 three-point shots and qualified for the Top 16 with a comfortable 93-75 win over winless Buducnost VOLI Podgorica on Wednesday night. Unicaja improved to 3-2, while Buducnost dropped to 0-6 and was mathematically eliminated from Top 16 contention. Unicaja took the lead for good in the first quarter and never looked back behind Kyle Fogg who finished with 31 points on 6-for-10 three-point shooting. Carlos Suarez added 16 points in victory, while J.R. Reynolds scored 17 for the visitors.

Suad Sehovic hit a triple and Petar Popovic scored a pair of baskets for a slim Buducnost lead early on, but Fogg hit four triples in as many attempts in the opening five minutes and Unicaja stepped up defensively to take control. A three-pointer from Adam Waczynski made it 25-20 after 10 minutes, and Oliver Lafayette’s three made it 34-25 in the second. Reynolds and Bojan Subotic kept the visitors close, but back-to-back threes from Suarez and Fogg opened a double-digit margin, 44-33. Triples from Marcus Williams and Nemanja Vranjes cut it to 48-41 at halftime, and another one from Williams at the start of the third to 4. But Unicaja answered with a 14-2 run, sparked by Fogg and capped by a Daniel Diez triple to open a 64-48 advantage. The margin never dropped into single digits again and a 12-1 run to open the fourth quarter put the lead out of reach.

Head Coaches

PLAZA, JOAN
Unicaja Malaga
"I am satisfied with the win. We played our first game in 10 days, which is complicated, even more so without Jamar Smith. It was another test and I am satisfied with the step forwards my team took. We made some mistakes, but won all four quarters, with some authority."
ZOUROS, ILIAS
Buducnost VOLI Podgorica
"First of all, congratulations to Unicaja for the win. It is a team with very good athletes and shooters, very well coached by Joan Plaza. At the same time, even though we lost, I want to congratulate my own team. I have been here for just five days and we tried hard. We have a lot of things to improve and are missing some players, but we are on the right track."

Players

DIAZ, ALBERTO
Unicaja Malaga
"I think we played a good game. We were consistent and did what we had planned before the game. We managed to get an important win that allows us to go to the next round. Now it is time to finish in the highest spot we can in this group."
WILLIAMS, MARCUS
Buducnost VOLI Podgorica
"We played a good second half, but missed a lot of open shots that would have brought us closer. It was not enough after the first half. Coming back to Malaga is special, but it was very important for us to win tonight and we didn't do it."
