Will Clyburn - Ratiopharm Ulm - EC13 (photo Ratiopharm Ulm)Ratiopharm Ulm improved its mark to 3-1 in the tight Group C with an 83-80 victory at home over Union Olimpija Ljubljana. Will Clyburn led the way for Ulm with 17 points and 6 rebounds while Edgar Sosa had 11 points and Matt Howard added 9 points, 7 rebounds and 2 steals. Ljubljana dropped its record to 2-2 overall and 0-2 on the road despite Alen Omic collecting 18 points, 10 rebounds, 2 steals and 3 blocks. Deividas Gailius scored 12 points, Sasu Salin added 11 and Alex Stepheson and Jakov Vladovic both chipped in 10 points for the losing side.

Ulm jumped ahead 4-0 but Gailius hit for five points as Olimpija went up 4-8. Back-to-back baskets from Cedric Jackson increased the lead to 7-12 and it was 9-16 after two straight scores from Omic. After Jackson’s foul shot made it 13-20, Ulm finally got into the game with Cameron Long nailing a triple and Sosa scoring a basket and a trey at the quarter buzzer to get Ulm to within 23-26 after 10 minutes. The lead fluctuated between three and six points and Ljubljana was ahead 30-35 before Sosa and Adam Hess both nailed treys to spark an 18-4 run for a 48-39 Ulm cushion. Two Trent Plaisted foul shots pushed the margin to 54-44 at the break. Olimipija scored the first six points of the second half before Long knocked down a long ball and Plaisted threw down a dunk to make it 60-52. Salin answered with a triple and four free throws as Ljubljana cut the deficit to one point and trailed just 66-65 after three quarters. Vladovic gave Ljubljana the lead to start the fourth quarter and then knocked down a trey for a 71-74 lead. Ulm evened it back up at 74-74 and it was 76-77 when Vladovic again hit from downtown for a 76-80 Olimpija advantage with 2:12 minutes remaining. Daniel Theis answered and Clyburn drained a trey for an 81-80 Ulm lead with a minute left. After Gailius missed his shot, Per Guenther split two foul shots with 13 seconds remaining for an 82-80 lead for the hosts. Vladovic however missed his attempt to win the game from long range with two seconds left and Theis’s final free throw ended the scoring.

"I am satisfied with my team. All the guys showed that they are fighters on the court. In the second half we scored just half of the points we had in the first half. Nevertheless we stayed focused and won the game. The team did great rebounding which was crucial to win the game. I have to compliment Adam Hess for playing at power forward because of foul problems of Keaton Nankivil and Daniel Theis. He did a great job at rebounding and in defense. Unfortunately Matt Howard twisted his ankle and couldn’t come back. We have to wait for the diagnosis."
PIPAN, ALES
Union Olimpija Ljubljana
"Congratulations to Ulm for the victory. As we expected, it was a very tough game. The crucial moment was in the second quarter, as we made a lot of mistakes and missed a lot of easy shots. In the second half we kept playing tough defense and could not stop the best shooters from Ulm. Our offense was not the problem today. The main reason was our bad defensive rebounding as a consequence of a lack of concentration."

"We fought for 40 minutes – that’s the reason we won this game. Even though we didn’t shoot that great, we didn’t stop fighting. This is the biggest lesson we take as a team from this game. "
JACKSON, CEDRIC
Union Olimpija Ljubljana
"Rebounding was definitely key tonight. We should have been better there. We had many changes to win this game; that makes the loss even harder. I wasn`t surprised to face such a high level of intensity. We have to deal with that, especially in road games. "
