Bayern rallies past UCAM and into top spot in Group B

In a game that saw both teams reach the Top 16 while they were still playing, FC Bayern Munich rallied for a 79-90 victory at UCAM Murcia. Nick Johnson starred in a 0-13 fourth-quarter run with 9 points and an assist as Bayern took control and raised its record to 4-2, while dropping UCAM to the same record. Since Bayern also defeated UCAM earlier in the season, it now sits atop the group standings. Maxi Kleber led the winners with 20 points and 10 rebounds and Johnson finished with 16 points. Billy Baron was perfect in 14 trips to the foul line and led UCAM with 24 points. Jose Angel Antelo added 13 points and Vitor Faverani 11.

The visitors scored the game’s first 4 points, but had no answer for Baron, who led a 13-0 UCAM run in which he scored 8 to give the hosts a 26-18 lead. Anton Gavel’s free throws closed the gap to 28-23 after 10 minutes. Strong play by Faverani and Pedro Llompart boosted the difference to 40-29 midway through the second quarter. However Kleber led Bayern on a 2-10 charge to finish the half that made it 47-43 at the break. Bayern tied it twice early in the third quarter before Kleber gave the visitors a 53-55 edge. UCAM had no answer for Kleber, but when he rested the hosts regained the lead. However free throws by Ondrej Balvin and Nihad Djedovic put Bayern on top 63-66 through three quarters. Baron hit a go-ahead triple as the hosts started the fourth quarter on a 7-0 tear, but after a pair of lead changes, the visitors took control with a 0-13 run. Johnson starred with 9 points and an assist in the game-breaking run, which made it 75-86 and all but wrapped up the win.

"There were two different halves, but we finished the first well. Without the 14 turnovers in the first half, we would have been in control and I told the players at the break: No more turnovers, just play basketball. Then we played good defense, and we had good second chances our big men got us, especially Maxi. Nick Johnson then took over in the second half and showed his talent, he was decisive."
