Oldenburg cruises to fourth straight win

EWE Baskets Oldenburg improved its chances to reach the Top 16 by downing Galatasaray Doga Sigorta Istanbul 79-72 at home on Wednesday. Both teams now have 4-3 records in Group D, but Galatasaray has the tiebreak advantage between them since it registered a 92-79 home in against Oldenburg in Round 2. Tyler Larson led the winners with 21 points, Rasid Mahalbasic added 13 while Braydon Hobbs scored 12 for Oldenburg. Yigit Arslan paced Galatasaray with 20 points, Aaron Harrison added 15 and Tai Webster had 12 for the visitors. Webster and Harrison stepped up early, giving Galatasaray a 9-14 lead after 10 minutes. A three-point play by Mahalbasic briefly put Oldenburg ahead, 17-16. Harrison and Arslan fueled an 0-8 run which allowed the visitors to regain a 26-32 edge at halftime. Philipp Schwethelm buried a couple of three-pointers in an 11-0 run that gave Oldenburg a 39-36 edge after the break. An outstanding Larson helped the hosts to a 50-47 lead after 30 minutes. Larson got help from Hobbs and Mahalbasic, who made sure Oldenburg kept control of the game until the final buzzer.

Webster got Galatasaray going with a driving layup and Harrison added a three-pointer. A coast-to-coast layup by Webster caused Oldenburg to call timeout at 1-7. Mahalbasic scored down low, but Goksenin Koksal and Ege Arar kept the visitors in control, 3-10. Larson hit a jumper and Rickey Paulding added a fastbreak layup before the visitors stopped the game at 7-10. Greg Whittington took over with a put-back layup and got help from Harrison to lift Galatasaray to 9-14 after 10 minutes. Gerry Blakes and Webster exchanged baskets early in the second quarter and a three-pointer by Larson brought Oldenburg within 14-16. Mahalbasic took over with a three-point play that gave the hosts their first lead, 17-16. Arslan scored around the basket and got help from Harrison and Arar to make it 17-24 for Galatasaray after a 0-8 run. Lazeric Jones and Whittington each struck from beyond the arc to boost the visitors' lead to 21-30. A tip-in by Koksal made it a double-digit game, but Schwethelm hit a triple and Justin Sears added a jump hook to make it 26-32 at halftime.

Harrison and Blakes traded baskets after the break and a jumper by Webster gave Galatasaray a 28-36 lead. Hobbs struck from downtown and Schwethelm added two more from beyond the arc to restore an Oldenburg lead, 37-36. Paulding capped an 11-0 run with a layup before Whittington quickly tied the game with a triple at 39-39. After Mahalbasic and Zach Auguste exchanged jumpers, Larson gave the hosts a 43-41 edge. Arslan buried a three-pointer and Harrison added a layup-plus-foul, but Larson singlehandedly boosted Oldenburg to a 50-47 margin after 30 minutes. Nathan Boothe took over with 4 quick points early in the fourth quarter and Larson added a triple and a layup for a 59-50 Oldenburg margin. Arslan rescued Galatasaray with a reverse layup and a three-pointer, but a put-back layup by Mahalbasic and a bomb from beyond the arc by Hobbs boosted the hosts' lead to 64-55 midway through the fourth quarter. Hobbs struck twice from downtown, however, Arslan gave Galatasaray hope at 70-64 with less than 3 minutes left. Mahalbasic and Karsten Tadda sealed the outcome at 75-64 in the next-to-last minute.

Pivotal performer

In just his second EuroCup game with Oldenburg, Larson came off the bench and led the club to a big win. He finished the game with 21 points on 6-of-7 two-point shooting and 3-of-6 on three-pointers plus 3 rebounds, 4 assists, 2 steals and 3 fouls drawn for a PIR of 19 in less than 23 minutes.

Game-changing moment

Galatasaray dominated most of the way in the first half and built a 28-36 margin soon after the break, but Schwethelm buried a couple of three-pointers and Hobbs added another one in an 11-0 run that Paulding capped with a layup. Oldenburg got a 39-36 lead and never trailed after that momentum-switching run.

Stellar stat

Oldenburg's aggressive defense made the difference in this game. The hosts forced Galatasaray into 24 turnovers, which is a new club record for the Turkish powerhouse. Oldenburg only made 12 and those 10 extra possessions were important to the outcome of the game.

After a 0-3 start, Oldenburg is now on a four-game winning streak; it bested Unicaja Malaga at home and got road wins against Buducnost VOLI Podgorica and Asseco Arka Gdynia.

"It is not easy to come into the game when you have the pressure. It was very important that we did good work on defense. We missed very, very simple shots in the first half, but found our confidence in the second half to bring the win home. I said at halftime, and also before the start of the game, that we must believe in our skills and in our teammates' skills. At halftime, we said 'come on guys, we can shoot it, share the ball and shots will be falling in'. Guys believed in this, kept playing hard defense and won the game."

"I can only say great things. I think it is a very important win. It was a very important game for both teams. We wanted this win, to recover from our [German League] loss in Goettingen. You see we felt pressure from the start, wanted it too much, were not relaxed in shooting situations and our shots did not into the basket, but it was very important that also from the start, we played very hard defense. As a team, when we had no runs on offense, we kept working hard on defense. That was unusual for a game of this level, such a low-scoring first half. We said at halftime that we must stay with this defense and believe in our skills, in our teammates' skills. We needed to move the ball and create the best shot. Defensively, it was the same concept - play hard, communicate well, stop their pick-and-roll and take the rebounds. It was an important part of the game, taking the rebounds. Of course, we had help from our fans after playing five road games. Playing at home felt good and in the moment when we needed energy, our fans gave it to us, helping us to win today."

"First of all, congratulations to EWE Baskets Oldenburg. Before coming here, we knew this was going to be a tough game for us. Actually, we tried to control the pace of the game but especially in the second half, in the third quarter, we lost concentration and didn't focus on the game strategy. We gave them a lot of easy points and of course, one of the reasons was our turnovers. We had 24 turnovers and some of them were offensive fouls. This is why I am really surprised about these turnovers, 24 are too many, which means 24 more possessions for your opponent and in a 5-point game, it is a huge number. Another problem for us were our 12 assists because our team generally makes around 17-18 assists per game. In this game, 12 is less and less for us. These two segments of the stats sheet really hurt us in this game."

"It was a good show on our part defensively. In the first half, we had some problems on offense, but we stayed in the game. We had big contributions from the bench and that was crucial."
HOBBS, BRAYDON
EWE Baskets Oldenburg
"Big win for us to keep the momentum going for us. It’s kind of a tale of two halves. In the first half, the ball didn’t go in, but we played some pretty good defense. Second half we made 53 points. It’s a lot more fun when you see the ball is going in. It was a great atmosphere!"
LARSON, TYLER
EWE Baskets Oldenburg
"Shots were not falling in early for either team, but we stayed consistent. We went to the locker room and said 'in the second half, they are going to fall', playing in our home arena and finally they fell in the second half. I feel like we played good defense all game, that was our mentality coming into the game. In the second half, we just kept shooting the same shots we were shooting in the first and they fell. We started to play more as a team, started to move the ball better, but it all started on defense. They welcomed me from the start. When I first got here, we won in Poland and from there, it was just all love. The coach told me he wanted me to be a part of the family, so that is what it was from the start. Hopefully, we can keep the same momentum going into the next game."

"It was a tough loss. We knew it is a tough atmosphere here in Oldenburg to come into. Onto the next one for us."
