Fenerbahce breaks slump for first road win

Fenerbahce Beko Istanbul collected its first road victory of the season by knocking off LDLC ASVEL Villeurbanne 72-88 on Friday. Vladimir Stimac led the way with 21 points and 8 rebounds while Derrick Williams collected 17 points, 6 rebounds and 4 blocks to improve Fenerbahce's record to 3-7. Melih Mahmutoglu chipped in 14 points and Ali Muhammed had 13 for the winners. ASVEL dropped to 5-5 including its second straight loss at home after winning its first four games at Astroballe. David Lighty paced ASVEL with 18 points while Livio Jean-Charles had 15 points, 3 rebounds and 3 assists and Tonye Jekiri added 12 points.

It took nearly 2 minutes before either team could score, with Jekiri converting a three-point play for the hosts. Williams answered with a massive dunk and-one. He followed with a three-pointer and the Fenerbahce lead was 3-8 early. Four straight points from Jekiri were followed by another Williams dunk, a pair of scores from Stimac and a Luigi Datome triple as the visitors' advantage grew to 11-17. Lighty came off the ASVEL bench for 2 baskets and the home side trailed 16-19 after 10 minutes. Fenerbahce was able to gain control in the second quarter with 2 triples from Mahmutoglu and 6 points from Stimac in a 6-18 run to pull ahead 22-37. ASVEL tried to get back in the game with Theo Maledon hitting from long range and Jean-Charles tallying 7 points as the score was 36-48 at the break. Lighty's three-pointer was all that ASVEL scored in the first 5 minutes of the second half while Muhammed's layup pushed the gap to 39-54. Jekiri finally scored again for the hosts and Jordan Taylor knocked down a three-ball at 44-56. Stimac scored twice at the other end and Williams hit a triple in helping increase the cushion to 46-61. Amine Noua answered with a triple but Muhammed's buzzer-beater gave Fenerbahce a 52-67 advantage after 30 minutes. Kostas Sloukas started the fourth quarter with a three-pointer to begin a 2-8 surge for a 54-75 Fenerbahce lead, and it was 58-80 after another Muhammed trey. ASVEL showed it was not dead yet with back-to-back three-pointers from Charles Kahudi to get within 64-80 with 5 minutes left. Lighty would add another long ball and it was 67-82, but ASVEL would not get closer than 14 points the rest of the game.

Close to career high

Vladimir Stimac had by far his best game of the season with 21 points on 8-for-12 two-point shooting and 5-of-7 free throws to go with 8 rebounds. He came into the game having scored a total of 11 points in four games. The 21 points were just one off his career high.

Still no De Colo and Vesely

Fenerbahce won without Nando De Colo making the trip to his native France while Jan Vesely did not play despite being in uniform. Vesely scored 4 points in 11:57 minutes against FC Barcelona in Round 9 while De Colo has not played since Round 7.

Telling numbers

Fenerbahce not only out-rebounded ASVEL 35-27, but it hit 59.5% from two-point range and a white-hot 69.2% from long range, not to mention 17-of-20 (85.0%) on free throws.

Next games

After two straight home games, both losses, ASVEL heads on the road to face Maccabi FOX Tel Aviv on November 28. Fenerbahce meanwhile hopes to build on the momentum and welcomes Khimki Moscow Region to Istanbul the same night.

Head Coaches

MITROVIC, ZVEZDAN
LDLC ASVEL Villeurbanne
"Fenerbahce are really a great team, and we made too many mistakes to even be close to them tonight. That is the main reason. I am happy. I congratulated my guys. They really gave effort; you see that. But this is a different level. I'm really proud and really okay with my team, absolutely, and I expect more games like this. This is very realistic for us."
OBRADOVIC, ZELJKO
Fenerbahce Beko Istanbul
"It was a good reaction. They played from the first to the last second very good. It was very important for us, first of all for the players, to understand that we have quality and we need to continue in that way. We know that ASVEL is a team that plays a very physical game so it was very necessary to answer that, and I believe we were at the level that was necessary for this game. We beat a team that really plays good basketball. Here they only had lost against Anadolu Efes. They also had a possibility to come back in the end and win the game. So I think it was very important for my team to learn what is the key and how we want to play in the future."

Players

DIOT, ANTOINE
LDLC ASVEL Villeurbanne
"Fenerbahce is a big team with a huge roster despite their injuries, and we expected that kind of tough game. Unfortunately, we were far from our best basketball, with no response. We just have to go back to work to put some shots in and fix some details in defense."
KAHUDI, CHARLES
LDLC ASVEL Villeurbanne
"With such a bad field goal percentage, we could not hope for something, and defensively we made big mistakes. We expected a tough game because of their situation and tonight, there was no game!"
WILLIAMS, DERRICK
Fenerbahce Beko Istanbul
"ASVEL is a good team. They are obviously very good at home, they have some quality wins so far this season. We've been on a little losing streak so we wanted to play with passion, heart, determination. As long as you play with that, win or lose you go home happy. Early on in the season we haven't been going home happy, regardless of the win or loss. We just have to continue playing with heart. Tonight was the first road win and I think it builds a lot of character as the season goes on. Everybody in the locker room is gonna be happy about this one."
STIMAC, VLADIMIR
Fenerbahce Beko Istanbul
"It was a great game for us. We are happy, and we hope to keep going like this. For sure it is hard sometimes when you are in a slump. But I hope with this game we go out and start a winning streak."
