Panellinios celebrated a spot in the Last 16 on Tuesday after beating Turk Telekom 82-74 and getting the result it needed in the other Group D game to place second in the group. Panellinios improved to 3-3 and edged out Greek League rival Aris BSA 2003 for second place on a tiebreaker after Aris lost at Bnei Hasharon’s in the group's other Week 6 fixture. Telekom, which had already secured the top spot in the group, dropped to 4-2. Ivan Radenovic scored 20 points and Brad Newley added 16 to pace Panellinios, which was in control for much of the night. The hosts used 10 unanswered points to take a 33-17 lead in the second period. Telekom got within 43-30 at halftime and then 7 early in the fourth quarter, but never any closer. Jurica Golemac added 12 points and Manolis Papamakarios had 11 for the winners. Serkan Erdogan had 14 for Telekom, which was without the injured Erwin Dudley and Kris Lang. Kennedy Winston and Mutlu Akpinar added 13 each in defeat.
Golemac gave Panellinios an early 5-2 lead with the first three-pointer of the night, but the visitors answered from downtown and Bekir Yarangume made it 9-10. But Panellinios looked hungrier and proceeded to outrebound its opponent, forced it into consecutive turnovers and score 9 straight points for an 18-10 lead. The first period ended with Baris Ozcan netting a three point shot at the buzzer to cut the margin to 23-17. By the beginning of the second quarter, Panellinios improved its defense and didn’t let Turk Telekom play its game. The visitors committed 3 straight turnovers and Panellinios took advantage of every opportunity to go to the basket. Turk Telekom remained scoreless for six minutes as Panellinios scored 10 unanswered points for a 33-17 lead. Papamakarios nailed back-to-back threes to help Panellinios soar to 39-22. Baris Ermis was the only weapon Telekom had at that points until an Erdogan three-pointer cut the lead to 11. Papamakarios made a jumper to close the first half at 43-30.
Panellinios started the second half in high gear with Newley increasing the gap to 49-32. The 17-point margin was an alarm for the visitors, who tried to play better defense to get back in the game. Bekir Yarangume hit a three pointer during a 2-10 Telekom run that made it 53-45. Mutlu Akpinar drilled a pair of threes, but Panellinios didn’t panic and closed the third period with a 64-51 lead. Erdogan scored from behind the arc to cut it to 66-59, but Turk Telekom couldn’t get any closer. Papamakarios added another three and brought his team’s lead again to double digits, 69-59. Although Ivan Radenovic missed 7 free throws, Panellinios controlled the game and celebrated not only the victory, but also its qualification to the next round.
