Sergey Monya - BC Khimki - EB12In a tough duel played on Wednesday night in Khimki, Russia, host Khimki Moscow Region held off Pinar Karsiyaka Izmir 80-66 not without suffering. The hosts controlled the first steps of the game, but the guests jumped ahead soon enough and Khimki had to fight back to find the lead again at the break. In the second half, Khimki held off Karsiyaka's attempts to the win until the very last minute, but emerged victorious. Paul Davis led the winners with 18 points, Sergey Monia added 14 and Egor Vyaltsev and Mickael Gelabale posted 11 apiece. For Karsiyaka, Esteban Batista led all scorers with 20 points, Jon Diebler added 19 and Leo Lyons, 15. With the win, Khimki improves to 3-1 in Group E while Karsiyaka loses its first game and stays also at 3-1.

The guests started strong with a 2-11 starting run capped by Soner Senturk's layup. Khimki reacted fast with Petteri Koponen points, but Pinar Karsiyaka held the avalanche off and managed to keep a solid cushion around the 7 points as Esteban Batista was soon up to 10 points when he made it 11-19. In the last breath Jon Diebler squeezed in a layup for a 15-23 after 10 minutes. The second quarter was a different story. Khimki regrouped and started climbing back as Koponen and Sergey Monia drained back-to-back threes for 25-29. Karsiyaka tried to resist to keep thelead, but more threes by Monia and Marko Popovic finally turned the deal upside down and put the hosts in command at the break, 37-34. The third quarter was as balanced as they come as Batista and John Diebler pulled from the Karsiyaka wagon as Bobby Dixon had already dished out 8 assists. The game was close on every statistical category even, and as such, there was a 52-51 on the scoreboard after 30 minutes. Khimki reacted in the first steps of the decisive quarter and built a 9-point lead, 62-53, with Kresimir Loncar's layup. But Karsiyaka was far from surrender, and had a 0-7 run to be back to the game but then again, Khimki stroke back with its own 9-0 as Paul Davis reached his 14th point for 71-60. Karsiyaka played its last cards in trying to be back, but David was a force in the paint keeping Khimki at a safe distance and onto the win.

"Everyone knew the importance and the take of this game. Perhaps that factor pressed us down in the first quarter, we were slow, cautious, made mistakes many times, not only when we lost the ball, but also in defense. Nevertheless, I am pleased with the energy, diligence and aggression, especially in defense, because we were able to stop Pinar Karsiyaka on only by 66 points. I think we scored a deserved victory. The main thing is that we managed to reduce the number of mistakes, that's what we were going for. In the third and fourth quarters we made only two mistakes. It is also important to bear in mind the margin as we will have a very important return game in Turkey."
SARICA, UFUK
Pinar Karsiyaka Izmir
"Congratulations to Khimki, which is a very good team with a Euroleague roster. We wanted to win before the game. Also we played a really good third quarter. In the last quarter Khimki scored 28 points, which is too much. So we lost our first game, but we are in good shape right now. We will have a return game in Izmir and anything is possible. Of course, we would like to win and I believe we may do it."

Players

KOPONEN, PETTERI
Khimki Moscow Region
"It’s a very important win for us as our opponent had a 3-0 record before this game. At home we must beat every team. In the first half we did not start very good and allowed Karsiyaka players to shot too easy baskets, but after the break we played very good defense. I think the key was the defense against Bobby Dixon."
DIEBLER, JON
Pinar Karsiyaka Izmir
"We were fighting during first three quarters, made some big shots. We faced a very good opponent today. It’s our first loss in the Eurocup. So now we go home, have some practice and try to come up in the next games."
