Ulm thrashes Venice in Eurocup season opener

ratiopharm Ulm had a strong start in Group C by downing Umana Reyer Venice 87-68 at home on Wednesday. Raymar Morgan paced the winners with 22 points on 9-of-12 two-point shots, 10 rebounds, 5 assists and 3 steals, good for a performance index ranking of 41. Augustin Rubit and DeAndre Kane each had 12 while Philipp Neumann had 10 for Ulm, which outrebounded Venice by 41-31. Mike Bramos led the guests with 17 points. Benjamin Ortner added 14 for Venice. Ulm led 22-14 after 10 minutes and an outstanding Morgan allowed the hosts to boost their margin to 45-28 at halftime. Nothing changed after the break, as Ulm kept a double-digit margin until the final buzzer.

Morgan got Ulm going with a put-back basket which Bramos bettered with a triple for a 2-3 Venice lead. Morgan kept pacing Ulm and a three-pointer by Joschka Ferner gave the hosts a 9-6 lead. Morgan stayed unstoppable and a layup by Rubit gave Ulm a 15-8 margin. Phil Goss and Bramos stepped up for the guests but a three-pointer by Jose Arco and a final basket by Kane boosted the hosts' lead to 22-14 after 10 minutes. Bramos sank another triple and a put-back layup by Hrvoje Peric gave Venice hope at 25-19. It didn't last long, however, as a 10-0 run which Philipp Neumann capped with a basket broke the game open, 35-19. Ortner tried to change things with back-to-back baskets but Morgan singlehandedly kept Ulm way ahead, 41-23. Free throws by Kane gave the hosts a 45-28 margin at halftime.

Bramos sank back-to-back three-pointers immediately after the break but Rubit and an unstoppable Morgan kept Ulm out of trouble, 51-36. A red hot Bramos scored again but Kane and Rubit restored a 55-38 Ulm margin midway through the third quarter. Goss hit free throws and found Ortner for an easy basket but Bonn kept scoring fluently at the other end and a three-pointer by Arco boosted his team's margin to 63-44. Jarrus Jackson and Ortner allowed Venice to get within 66-52 after 30 minutes. Peric hit a jumper early in the fourth quarter and Stefano Tonut added another basket but the guests could not get closer. A 7-0 run highlighted by Arco's three-pointer sealed the outcome, 76-56, with under 6 minutes left. Goss and Ortner kept trying but Ulm had cruised to a well-deserved win.

Head Coaches

LEIBENATH, THORSTEN
ratiopharm Ulm
“All in all it was a good game that we dominated – unless the three point shots didn’t go in. The 68 points Venice scored make me angry. We had three quarters of solid defense. We dictated the action. But in the last 10 minutes we acted too passive. If we want to beat a top team, we have to defend on a solid level over four [quarters].”
RECALCATI, CARLO
Umana Reyer Venice
“First of all I want to congratulate our opponents, who played a great game. We had problems because we missed our starting point guard Mike Green, but especially Ulm was responsible for a lot of trouble we had in every part of the game. We also missed some open shots, but the defense of Ulm was very tough and well-organized. Ulm also dominated the rebounding.”

Players

MORGAN, RAYMAR
ratiopharm Ulm
"We played good defense over three quarters of the game – if we can do that over 40 minutes, we can play even better. After my nose injury in the last German League game, I had two days of rest. I guess that helped me somehow. But the key tonight was our defensive effort – and our ball movement."
BRAMOS, MICHAEL
Umana Reyer Venice
"They beat us from the beginning to the end, because they were better in every part of the game. We have to learn from that – it’s early in the season. Even though I had a good shooting night, I cannot be happy with my performance. "
