Real beats CSKA for fifth straight win

In a battle between the last two Turkish Airlines EuroLeague champions, Real Madrid completed a perfect double-round week by downing CSKA Moscow 97-81 in the Spanish capital on Friday. Real improved to 7-3 in the standings and is now on a five-game winning streak, while CSKA dropped to 6-4. Facu Campazzo led the winners with 18 points. Gabriel Deck added 17 and 11 rebounds, Sergio Llull had 15 points, Rudy Fernandez 13 and Anthony Randolph 12 for Real. Johannes Voigtmann led CSKA with 20 points. Mike James added 14, Joel Bolomboy 12 and Janis Strelnieks 11 for the guests. Campazzo and Deck shined early, fueling a 9-0 run which allowed Real to keep a 23-19 edge after 10 minutes. Voigtmann scored 17 points in the second quarter but Sergio Llull, Rudy Fernandez and Anthony Randolph allowed Real to keep a 52-48 lead at halftime. Fabien Causeur and an unstoppable Deck allowed Real to boost its margin to 61-48 soon after the break. The hosts kept a double-digit lead, 75-64, after 30 minutes, and managed to control the game until the final buzzer.

Campazzo got Real going with a jumper and Deck followed an up-and-under layup with a fastbreak basket in a 9-0 opening run that made CSKA call timeout. Kyle Hines rescued the guests, scoring twice in the paint and sending Edy Tavares to the bench with 2 fouls. Bolomboy and James each struck from downtown to tie it at 11-11. Campazzo joined the three-point shootout and Jaycee Carroll added a one-handed floater in the lane for a 16-13 Real edge. Llull hit a triple in transition, getting help from Deck and Carroll to give their team a 23-19 margin after 10 minutes. Llull banked in a floater early in the second quarter and Jordan Mickey soon made it 27-19. CSKA found a go-guy in Voigtmann, who scored a floater, a three-pointer and a put-back layup in a 0-10 run that gave the guests a 27-29 lead. Kosta Koufos hit a jump hook and Voigtmann added a tip-in but Llull and Fernandez each hit from beyond the arc as Real regained a 34-33 edge. Llull and Fernandez kept pacing the hosts but an unstoppable Voigtmann got help from Janis Strelnieks, whose 7 points in a couple of minutes put CSKA back ahead, 43-46. Fernandez answered from downtown and Deck bettered Voigtmann's dunk with a three-point play for a 49-48 Real edge. A three-pointer by Randolph fixed the halftime score at 52-48. Real improved its defense after the break, holding CSKA scoreless for over 4 minutes. Meanwhile, Campazzo and Causeur made it a double-digit game, 58-48. Randolph capped a 15-0 Real run with a bomb from downtown. Darrun Hilliard tried to change things for CSKA with a triple but an unstoppable Deck followed a jump hook with a turnaround jumper that broke the game open at 66-51. Hilliard and Strelnieks combined for 6 quick points but Causeur and Deck kept their momentum going, keeping Real way ahead, 73-59. Bolomboy used a corner triple to give CSKA hope, 75-64, after 30 minutes. A three-pointer by Voigtmann brought the guests within single digits, 75-68, early in the fourth quarter. Llull took over with back-to-back jumpers that Fernandez followed with a circus shot that restored an 81-70 Real margin. James shocked the crowd with an unbelievable four-point play but a big basket by Campazzo gave Real fresh air at 83-75. Trey Thompkins ignited the crowd with a three-point play and Campazzo banked in a floater that sealed the outcome, 90-78, as CSKA never recovered.

Pivotal performer

Deck had his first EuroLeague double-double and his versatility, aggresiveness and determination allowed Real to get an important win. He finished the game with career highs in points (17), rebounds (11), assists (6) and PIR (33). Outstanding!

Game-changing moment

Strelnieks and Voigtmann put CSKA ahead, 46-48, soon after the break. A layup-plus-free throw by Deck ignited a 15-0 run in which Randolph struck twice from downtown and Causeur added a couple of layups to put Real ahead for good, 61-48. CSKA never regained the momentum, as Real kept a comfortable lead until the final buzzer.

Stellar stat

Two-point shooting made the difference in this game. Real scored 25 shots inside the arc with a solid percentage (25-of-41, 61%). CSKA was limited to 15-of-44 two-point shots (34.1%). Real took fewer two-point shots, and made 10 more than CSKA.

Did you notice?

With his 3 rejections today, Tavares has accumulated 76 blocked shots in the last two EuroLeague seasons. He only had one of his shots rejected in that span. The only player to block one of Tavares's shot in the last two seasons was Jeremy Evans, playing for Darussafaka Tekfen Istanbul last season.

Next game

Both teams return for Round 11 next Friday, November 29. Real visits Zenit St Petersburg, featuring former Real center Gustavo Ayon, while CSKA also plays on the road against FC Barcelona.

"First of all, congratulations to my team for tonight's win. I think this is a game that we approached really well. Only in the second quarter, in which both teams tied, trading baskets all the way, very fun-to-watch, but it is possible that [CSKA coach Dimitris] Itoudis didn't like it – and I didn't. They found an advantage with Voigtmann stretching the floor and that took us out of our defensive routines. The defensive job in all the other three quarters was very good. We controlled that situation in the second half and other than in the second quarter, CSKA scored less than 20 points in all other quarters. That was key. By playing defense, we got the control of the game, moving the ball. We found advantages in different situations – with Gaby [Deck] in the low post, with Facu [Campazzo] in pick-and-rolls, as well as finding our shooters. In general terms, I think we played a very solid game and I am happy with the win against a great rival. Ranking third in the standings is not that important; of course, in the end, you see the standings and it is always better to see your team in the first positions. We have a long way to go and know how difficult it is. Each game is different and complicated. Tonight, we played against an opponent who came after a loss in Vitoria where it could have won, but lost. They were really solid and we had to be very focused all game long. Right now, our goal is the same, and it is better to have seven wins than six, but it would be absurd to think on the current standings with so many games ahead of us."
ITOUDIS, DIMITRIS
CSKA Moscow
"I would like to congratulate Madrid for this win. We had a different mentality and a different mindset in the game today, compared to the last one we played against Baskonia. Unfortunately, that was not enough against such a good team that played together in the last years. They haven't changed much in their roster. Their two additions – actually, one of them didn't even check in the game and the other played 20 minutes. I want to say that they had their runs and this cost us a lot. Their 9-0 run in both the first and the third quarters, which is 18-0, cost us a lot down the stretch. We were chasing them and had a very good parts in the game, definitely, that second quarter in which we took the lead. They made some tough shots, like we also made some tough shots, but overall, the game could have had a different end regarding the margin. I am not talking about the outcome but the margin was 6 points with 3 minutes left. We were chasing the game again. I am saying that these two runs cost us a lot. If you see the stats, you will figure out that they shot 60% from twos and we shot 34%. It gives you a quite clear picture of the percentages and the kind of shots we took. For this trip in Spain so far, we have a lot of things to work on regarding the runs that our opponents had, because Baskonia also had a 9-0 run and a 13-0 run, and the turnovers. These are definitely the two things we have to talk about."

Players

DECK, GABRIEL
Real Madrid
"I am always happy when I am able to help the team in everything I can. As I always say, anybody stepping on court can contribute good things to the team. I am happy for the team. I grew up a lot after the World Cup but I think it is also because of my own confidence, and the confidence I get from the team and our coaching staff. I am thankful to them every day, and it motivates me to keep working. We knew it would be a tough game against a team that plays well, the last EuroLeague champion. Like I said, the team did really well almost all game long. These two wins are really important, because we have to add wins, as many as we can. We have to rest and get ready for the next game."
CAUSEUR, FABIEN
Real Madrid
"If you play against the EuroLeague champion, you know it will be a difficult game. We did a great job today, pushed by our fans, and played a good game. When we play defense and control the defensive rebound, it allows us to play in transition and run. This is when we find quick shots and have good moments. Playing five-on-five offense against a big, strong team like CSKA is always more difficult. We got two wins in games that we expected to be very difficult. We are very happy. We are climbing in the standings and have to keep moving forward. We have to enjoy this, have dinner quietly and prepare the next game tomorrow. Gaby Deck is proving that there is nothing he cannot do. He is giving us a lot, especially in the low post. He is a great athlete and when he is shooting with confidence, it is very difficult to stop him."
LLULL, SERGIO
Real Madrid
"We are happy. We played a great game at home, in front of our fans, against a tough team like CSKA. I think we did a great job. I don't think that I have to prove anything. I just play help my teammates and win games, to reach the finals and win them. It is the only thing that it is in my mind."
BOLOMBOY, JOEL
CSKA Moscow
"Coming into this game tonight after losing to Baskonia, our mindset was that we had to play harder, bounce back and just play for each other, like we had nothing to lose, and we showed it. We have to continue to keep getting better defensively and, obviously, keep executing offensively to get better as a team. We had a lot of good moments but we also had our moments where we didn't look like a team, where we disconnected. We weren't on the same page, with a lot of miscommunications and simple mistakes defensively. We have to watch film and continue to keep to get better, keep practicing."
