Real beats CSKA for fifth straight win
In a battle between the last two Turkish Airlines EuroLeague champions, Real Madrid completed a perfect double-round week by downing CSKA Moscow 97-81 in the Spanish capital on Friday. Real improved to 7-3 in the standings and is now on a five-game winning streak, while CSKA dropped to 6-4. Facu Campazzo led the winners with 18 points. Gabriel Deck added 17 and 11 rebounds, Sergio Llull had 15 points, Rudy Fernandez 13 and Anthony Randolph 12 for Real. Johannes Voigtmann led CSKA with 20 points. Mike James added 14, Joel Bolomboy 12 and Janis Strelnieks 11 for the guests. Campazzo and Deck shined early, fueling a 9-0 run which allowed Real to keep a 23-19 edge after 10 minutes. Voigtmann scored 17 points in the second quarter but Sergio Llull, Rudy Fernandez and Anthony Randolph allowed Real to keep a 52-48 lead at halftime. Fabien Causeur and an unstoppable Deck allowed Real to boost its margin to 61-48 soon after the break. The hosts kept a double-digit lead, 75-64, after 30 minutes, and managed to control the game until the final buzzer.
Campazzo got Real going with a jumper and Deck followed an up-and-under layup with a fastbreak basket in a 9-0 opening run that made CSKA call timeout. Kyle Hines rescued the guests, scoring twice in the paint and sending Edy Tavares to the bench with 2 fouls. Bolomboy and James each struck from downtown to tie it at 11-11. Campazzo joined the three-point shootout and Jaycee Carroll added a one-handed floater in the lane for a 16-13 Real edge. Llull hit a triple in transition, getting help from Deck and Carroll to give their team a 23-19 margin after 10 minutes. Llull banked in a floater early in the second quarter and Jordan Mickey soon made it 27-19. CSKA found a go-guy in Voigtmann, who scored a floater, a three-pointer and a put-back layup in a 0-10 run that gave the guests a 27-29 lead. Kosta Koufos hit a jump hook and Voigtmann added a tip-in but Llull and Fernandez each hit from beyond the arc as Real regained a 34-33 edge. Llull and Fernandez kept pacing the hosts but an unstoppable Voigtmann got help from Janis Strelnieks, whose 7 points in a couple of minutes put CSKA back ahead, 43-46. Fernandez answered from downtown and Deck bettered Voigtmann's dunk with a three-point play for a 49-48 Real edge. A three-pointer by Randolph fixed the halftime score at 52-48. Real improved its defense after the break, holding CSKA scoreless for over 4 minutes. Meanwhile, Campazzo and Causeur made it a double-digit game, 58-48. Randolph capped a 15-0 Real run with a bomb from downtown. Darrun Hilliard tried to change things for CSKA with a triple but an unstoppable Deck followed a jump hook with a turnaround jumper that broke the game open at 66-51. Hilliard and Strelnieks combined for 6 quick points but Causeur and Deck kept their momentum going, keeping Real way ahead, 73-59. Bolomboy used a corner triple to give CSKA hope, 75-64, after 30 minutes. A three-pointer by Voigtmann brought the guests within single digits, 75-68, early in the fourth quarter. Llull took over with back-to-back jumpers that Fernandez followed with a circus shot that restored an 81-70 Real margin. James shocked the crowd with an unbelievable four-point play but a big basket by Campazzo gave Real fresh air at 83-75. Trey Thompkins ignited the crowd with a three-point play and Campazzo banked in a floater that sealed the outcome, 90-78, as CSKA never recovered.
Pivotal performer
Deck had his first EuroLeague double-double and his versatility, aggresiveness and determination allowed Real to get an important win. He finished the game with career highs in points (17), rebounds (11), assists (6) and PIR (33). Outstanding!
Game-changing moment
Strelnieks and Voigtmann put CSKA ahead, 46-48, soon after the break. A layup-plus-free throw by Deck ignited a 15-0 run in which Randolph struck twice from downtown and Causeur added a couple of layups to put Real ahead for good, 61-48. CSKA never regained the momentum, as Real kept a comfortable lead until the final buzzer.
Stellar stat
Two-point shooting made the difference in this game. Real scored 25 shots inside the arc with a solid percentage (25-of-41, 61%). CSKA was limited to 15-of-44 two-point shots (34.1%). Real took fewer two-point shots, and made 10 more than CSKA.

With his 3 rejections today, Tavares has accumulated 76 blocked shots in the last two EuroLeague seasons. He only had one of his shots rejected in that span. The only player to block one of Tavares's shot in the last two seasons was Jeremy Evans, playing for Darussafaka Tekfen Istanbul last season.

Both teams return for Round 11 next Friday, November 29. Real visits Zenit St Petersburg, featuring former Real center Gustavo Ayon, while CSKA also plays on the road against FC Barcelona.
