Teodosic and hot-shooting CSKA down Barcelona

Milos Teodosic starred with a double-double and CSKA Moscow was hot from long range to continue its winning streak at home by downing FC Barcelona Lassa 92-76 in the Russian capital on Friday. The victory marked CSKA’s 17th consecutive home win and improved its record to a league-leading 11-1. The loss dropped Barcelona to 5-7. The hosts had a strong start and opened an 18-point lead early in the second quarter, but a 0-14 run spanning the second and third quarters put Barcelona in front. However, a little bit of Teodosic magic and hitting 15 three-pointers on 23 attempts paved CSKA’s way to victory. Teodosic had 16 points and 11 assists, Cory Higgins netted 23 points with 5 steals. Nikita Kurbanov scored 15, and Vitaly Fridzon added 13 points in 8 minutes for CSKA, which forced 24 turnovers and had 16 steals. Both Nando De Colo and Aaron Jackson missed this game for the hosts. Victor Claver scored 17 points with 6 rebounds for Barcelona, and Petteri Koponen netted 13 in the losing effort.

Joel Freeland twice inside, and Andrey Vorontevich once from the outside helped CSKA grab an early lead. Tyrese Rice hit a triple for the visitors, but Higgins scored 7 points for CSKA, including a three, and a layup on Teodosic’s assist that opened a 19-7 advantage. Dmitry Kulagin’s corner three made it 24-11 after 10 minutes. A three-pointer from Fridzon made it 29-11 in the second quarter before Stratos Perperoglou strung together 6 points for the visitors, and Juan Carlos Navarro – back in action after missing 10 games through injury – nailed a triple to closed the deficit to 31-20. A couple more baskets from Navarro and long-range basket from Aleksandar Vezenkov drew Barcelona within single digits. Higgins and Nikita Kurbanov nailed three-point shots that extended the margin back to 44-33, but Barcelona scored the final 9 points of the half with back-to-back threes from Brad Oleson and Claver that made it 44-42 at halftime. Koponen’s triple gave Barcelona a 44-47 lead, capping a 0-14 run over a span of more than 6 minutes late in the second and early third quarter. But Teodosic kept CSKA going, and his four-point play gave CSKA breathing room at 64-57. Kurbanov’s triple that beat the third-quarter buzzer made it 71-65 going into fourth stanza and the hosts never looked back. CSKA held the visitors to a single basket for the first 6 minutes of the fourth quarter, before consecutive triples from Kulagin, Fridzon and James Augustine made it 87-72 to secure the victory.

"Big congratulations to my team. We were very good for three quarters. We probably damaged our picture a little bit in the second quarter when we had a bad balance, which started from our bad offense. We gave them a lot of easy points, and we did not even force them to sweat defensively in that second quarter. We became a team of one pass, and that is not our game. Our game is based on a good creation, and good ball movement with good space. But for 30 minutes we did play good, we had players step up and play really good basketball. For sure, this is another good win for us in this marathon with still a lot of games to go. A lot of good things happened tonight that will help us to study the game. This is our destiny, to fight and fight and fight. The crowd was very good and helped the team. We gave up 34 points in the second half, which is almost the same what we gave up in the second quarter. In the first and last quarter we gave up 22 points combined, that is when our defense worked perfectly. We changed a lot of defenses in regards of who we had on the court, and who they had on the court. That was good to see. "

"Congrats to CSKA for the win. We had to play better for four quarters. We played well for only two quarters, second and third. In the first we turned the ball over 8 times. And having 24 turnovers for the game, it is very difficult to be consistent and fight for the win. If you want to beat CSKA, you cannot turn the ball over so many times. You have to be consistent on both ends, defensively and offensively, and need to play for 40 minutes. For us, it was difficult because we were consistent for only two quarters. Congrats to CSKA."

"We came out playing very well in the beginning. I think we relaxed too much and let them back in the game. We picked it back up in the second half. Everybody played great in the second half, both offensively and defensively, and that is how we got the win. Navarro is always a hard matchup because he can do so many things on the court. The main thing is always be locked in with him and not give him anything easy."
