Tyus, Micov carry Galatasaray past Milan for 4thstraight home win

Galatasaray Odeabank Istanbul survived a late challenge from EA7 Emporio Armani Milan for an 83-80 victory on Friday at Abdi Ipekci Arena. Vladimir Micov scored a career-high 23 points and Alex Tyus delivered a pair of spectacular blocks before scoring the go-ahead with a put-back as Galatasaray won its fourth straight home game to improve to 4-8 on the season. Galatasaray led for nearly all of the first three quarters, with the margin reaching 14 in the third before Milan roared back. The fourth quarter would feature six lead changes and five ties before Galatasaray wrested away the victory. Blake Schilb scored 17 points and dished 5 assists for the winners, Tyus posted 14 points, 7 rebounds and 3 blocks, Sinan Guler tallied 13 points and 5 assists and Jon Diebler added 11 points. Rakim Sanders scored 18 points to lead Milan, which fell to 4-8. Kruno Simon added 15 points, Ricky Hickman scored 13 and Miroslav Raduljica netted 12 in defeat.

Schilb had the hot hand early with 2 free throws and a pair of jumpers as the hosts jumped to a 9-4 lead. Milan soon closed the gap to 11-10, but the hosts remained in control and behind threes by Micov and Guler soared to 21-12. Mantas Kalnietis’s three-point play narrowed the gap to 21-15 after 10 minutes. Micov connected on his third and fourth triples to keep his team cruising at 31-21 midway through the second quarter. Sanders heated up with 5 quick points for Milan, which drew within 33-30, but soon Schilb and Diebler connected on back-to-back threes to extend the difference to 9 and Schilb’s tip-in beat the buzzer for a 43-32 halftime lead. Micov picked up where he left off with 5 more points to keep the home team in control. Diebler drained a pair of triples to make it 54-40. Milan came right back as Zoran Dragic and Kruno Simon hit threes in a 2-12 charge. Hickman also connected from downtown to make it a 3-point game. After a Tyus slam and a Hickman layup the third quarter ended at 62-59. Jamel McLean stepped up with a rejection that triggered a fast break on which Hickman tied the game with a three. Sanders gave Milan its first lead since the first minute with a triple that made it 66-67. Guler tied it with free throws and the hosts seemed to be back in control after a Goksenin Koksal triple and a spectacular block by Tyus on Raduljica for a 77-72 lead. But Simon soon drilled a triple to tie it at 77-77. Another big three by Simon put the visitors ahead, however Tyus’s tip-in made it 81-80 and Sanders missed a jumper in the dying seconds. Micov then iced the game from the line.

"First of all, I would like to say that we are not in a good moment for our country. Also we are all upset about all that happened in our beautiful country, in our beautiful city. Also my players and I are affected by this. Our morale is not very good, but when you come on the court, life continues, and with our fans. It was a very important game for us because we would win and continue our race in the EuroLeague, but if we would lose, it would be very difficult. We played good in the first half of the game. We made first off good defense, also in the beginning of the third quarter. We controlled the game, but after, without a real point guard, we started to make some turnovers. We missed some open shots, easy shots, and Milano got a chance to win the game. But finally the game was for us and we won."
REPESA, JASMIN
EA7 Emporio Armani Milan
"We made several mistakes, but generally two or three times when the game seemed lost, we had the energy to respond and reassemble. We must remain calm and return to work in the gym to come out strong from this difficult time. A win at this time would serve us much. In the past I've seen a victory change a season. The last shot? It was one of the options, Rakim missed, but it was a good shot and I have nothing else to say about it."

MICOV, VLADIMIR

"We practiced a lot. We are tired. We are still missing a lot of injured players. We are missing bigs, we are missing smalls. But somehow we managed to win. I think in the first half we really played great basketball; in the end we were up by 11. But of course in the second half, they pushed and tried everything. We of course stopped playing some. We are tired, we have a small rotation. But at the end we won. I think we deserved it. I am repeating every time, but if we want to try to do something in the EuroLeague we must win on the road. A few games we lost unfortunately, and now we have a tough schedule next week, but it will be great if at the end of the first half we win some games on the road. In Kazan next week is a perfect moment for us to try to win, and then Efes here at home. With this victory, we get some confidence, of course, to play all those games in a better mood."
KALNIETIS, MANTAS
EA7 Emporio Armani Milan
"It's a tough loss to swallow. We came back strong and we never gave up, but it's still a loss after a hard-fought battle."
