Jerusalem cruises past Olimpija and into Top 16

Hapoel Bank Yahav Jerusalem clinched a spot in the Top 16 by beating Union Olimpija Ljubljana 81-69 at Pais Arena Jerusalem in the Israeli capital on Wednesday. Jerusalem improved to 4-2 and sits second in Group D, while Olimpija fell to 1-6 and was eliminated from Top 16 contention. Yotam Halperin led a balanced Jerusalem attack with 12 points and 5 assists off the bench, while Bar Timor also scored 12 and Amar’e Stoudemire posted 11 points, 6 rebounds and 3 blocks for the winners. Devin Oliver led Olimpija with 18 points and 11 rebounds, Nikola Jankovic posted 11 and 10 and Mirko Mulalic and Blaz Mesicek scored 10 points apiece in defeat.

Jerusalem managed to keep a slim lead throughout most of the first quarter, which ended with the hosts ahead 21-17. Oliver’s basket-plus-foul made it 25-23 early in the second quarter, but the visitors did not get closer than that. Timor scored 7 points in a 12-2 run that helped Jerusalem take a double-digit lead, which stood at 49-36 at the break. Tarence Kinsey scored the first 4 points of the second half and the hosts built on their lead. Stoudemire scored twice in a 9-0 Jerusalem push that took the difference to 20 and the hosts cruised to a 70-50 lead at the end of the third quarter. The lead peaked at 22 on a Shawn Jones slam early in the fourth quarter. Olimpija responded with 8 straight points to get within 72-58, but a triple by Timor kept the hosts in charge and Jerusalem rolled to victory.

"We tried to do our best and I think that we played well in the first 15 minutes, but after this we fell into a hole and Hapoel grabbed this opportunity to run away. The second half was just a question of how they will save the margin. We tried and twice came close, but of course not enough to change the game. I think we fought and maybe we can do better, but still the quality between the teams at this moment is too big, so this result is normal. "
