Caja Laboral walloped SLUC Nancy 90-55

Caja Laboral took an important step forward in its race to make the Top 16 by crushing SLUC Nancy 90-55 in a one-sided rout on Wednesday night. Mirza Teletovic dominated with 22 first-half points – outscoring the opposition himself in that period as Laboral took a 42-21 lead at the break. Then the hosts dominated the third quarter to go up by more than 40 before easing up down the stretch. The win lifted Laboral to 5-4 and edged the club closer to the Top 16. Nancy dropped to 3-6. Brad Olseon added 14 points for the winners, Fernando San Emeterio scored 13, Thomas Huertel 11 and Milko Bjelica 10 in a Laboral attack that shot 15 for 31 from downtown. Kenny Gregory led Nancy with 15 points and rookie Abdel Sylla scored 10.

Both teams missed inexplicable shots from the paint to start the second quarter, but Teletovic had no problem draining his fourth triple of the night. Pau Ribas’s steal led Huertel to a layup and a 27-11 lead. Kenny Grant and Victor Samnick answered for Nancy, but Teletovic cut to the basket to notch his 16th points – 1 more than all of Nancy. The scoring machine kept at it with a wicked spin move for a basket and foul and then a tip-in to make it 36-15. Grant’s wrap-around pass to Sylla stopped a three-minute Nancy drought. Sylla scored again, but Bjelica tipped in his own miss and drew a foul on defense to keep the hosts thoroughly in control. Sylla continued to make an impact with a two-handed jam, but Laboral still went into the locker room up 42-21 at halftime.

Any doubts to the outcome were quickly erased when San Emeterio, Oleson and Emeterio opened the third quarter with back-to-back-to-back three-pointers to put the hosts up 30. John Linehan stepped up for Nancy with a three of his own and Samnick added a basket, but Prigioni connected twice from downtown to make it 57-26. Oleson and San Emeterio continued the three-point assault and in no time the lead was 40. Gregory found his way to the rim for Nancy’s 30th point and a 71-30 deficit after 30 minutes.

Nancy went into the fourth quarter hoping to make the score more respectable and a 0-8 start helped. Pape Philippe Amagou, Sylla and then Adrien Moerman with a steal and layup did the work for the visitors. Sylla made it 12 unanswered points going back to the third quarter. Huertel bagged a jumper to end a four-minute Laboral drought, but with his team still up 33, there was little to worry about. The last few minutes provided highlights as both teams played free-flowing basketball with the result long clear to the fans on hand.

Head Coaches

IVANOVIC, DUSKO
Caja Laboral
"We were aware of the importance of this game. We started pretty well, both in offense and defense, we played with patience. Unfortunately in the last quarter some players weren’t able to take advantage of the situation and lost focus. Even though we were leading by 30 or more points, we kept fighting and putting intensity until the last quarter. We still need to wait for tomorrow’s game, but we need to realize and convince ourselves that we are capable of qualifying whatever the results are."
MONSCHAU, JEAN-LUC
SLUC Nancy
"One team was making all its shots and the other team was making no shots, at least not for three quarters. I am sorry we could not stay in the game. I am sorry for the spectators that we could not offer a better game. We were far off our standards. We have to find solutions to correct that. The fact that my players wanted to win the last quarter demonstrated the spirit in my players. I am with them when everything is going bad. I want to be with them. "

Players

PRIGIONI, PABLO
Caja Laboral
"I think we did a very good job before the game. We studied them in depth and we tried to exploit their weak points in defense. We set some plays to take advantage of the scouting we did and it worked fine. Once we got a good lead, I think we kept playing intelligent."
AKINGBALA, AKIN
SLUC Nancy
"I think the main reason for our loss tonight is that we didn’t execute as we should have done. We didn’t do things according to plan, and when you don’t execute correctly, against a team like Caja Laboral, you are blown out. They didn’t find resistance and rolled over us. The Euroleague is almost over for us, I think we had the potential, but we missed Nico Batum and that made the difference. He is a player that did a lot for us, we lost strength after he left and I think that everything could have been different with him still in the team."
