WHAT'S NEW
New head coach Georgios Bartzokas will have the honor to lead Olympiacos Piraeus into its title defense. He takes over a virtually unchanged roster that took the Turkish Airlines Euroleague crown in May and won the Greek championship. With the additions of proven veterans Dimitrios Mavroeidis and Stratos Perperoglou, the Reds added more depth and experience to a roster that made history last season.
THE BACKCOURT
Euroleague Final Four MVP Vassilis Spanoulis is a key player for coach Bartokas – a true leader who shines in crucial moments. With his ability to score or just simply make plays, Spanoulis makes this team go. Olympiacos should also benefit from depth at point guard where Acie Law brings his toughness and explosiveness, and youngsters Evangelis Mantzaris and Kostas Sloukas bring the complete package on both ends of the floor. Martynas Gecevicius is a reliable shooter for the Reds, while the youngest player on the roster, Dimitrios Katsivelis, will look for extended minutes building on his experiences from the previous two seasons.
THE FRONTCOURT
Local hero Georgios Printezis and athletic forward Kostas Papanikolaou are key pieces of the Reds’ front line. Both of them possess skills to hurt opponents inside as well as on the perimeter, but their ability to spread the floor was crucial to their success last season. The addition of Perperoglou gives the team more three-point shooting, size and defenseon the wings. Olympiacos has lots of toughness and hustle in the paint with Kyle Hines, Richard Dorsey and Pero Antic. The addition of Mavroeidis gives them a back-to-the basket scorer and another big body that will play physical basketball inside.
OUTLOOK
Even though the hunter becomes the hunted, Olympiacos will follow for the same recipes that led it to such great success – combining the great energy the team always brings to the floor with the maturity and chemistry it showed at the end of last season. With the vast majority of the players returning, and with more size, more experience and sky-high confidence, the Reds have a trip to London on their minds.
PLAYER TO WATCH: Acie Law
He is already a hero and Law may not have played his best games yet for Olympiacos. The leadership and winning traits he displayed upon his move to the Reds least season helped the club achieve Turkish Airlines Euroleague glory. The chance to have a full preseason with the club promises to only make Law – and the entire Olympiacos squad – more dangerous en route to what could turn into another serious Euroleague run. |
