In an emotional press conference on Monday afternoon, Joan Plaza announced that he will not remain with Zalgiris Kaunas next season. In his only season coaching Zalgiris – and first season outside his native Spain – Plaza guided Zalgiris to a first-place finish in its Turkish Airlines Euroleague Regular Season group after a tie-break with eventual champion Olympiacos Piraeus. He also led Zalgiris to the Lithuanian League title and the VTB League semifinals. Before that, Plaza coached Cajasol Seville for three seasons and guided the team all the way to the 2011 Eurocup title game, which it lost against Unics Kazan. Before that, he led Cajasol to its first Spanish League playoffs appearance in 10 years in the 2009-10 season.
"I came here to say goodbye to all of you and it is not easy. Even though I worked in Kaunas for only 10 months, Zalgiris is in my heart. I am proud of the decision I made by coming here. It has helped me to become a better coach and a better human being," Plaza said. He was the first coach to last a full season on the Zalgiris sidelines since 2006. "My players gave their best and our fans were magnificent and supported us all season."
