Hapoel Jerusalem has made reigning Israeli League MVP Donta Smith the club’s first signing of the summer. The sides agreed to a three-year deal. Smith (2.00 meters, 30 years old) arrives from Maccabi Haifa Bazan, where he spent the past two seasons. Has been one of the most dominant players in Israel in recent years and produced similarly impressive numbers in the Eurocup. He was the Eurocup’s Regular Season Game 3 MVP after racking up a triple double with 18 points, 16 rebounds and 10 assists for a performance index rating of 41. Smith was also the Last 32 Game 3 MVP after scoring 24 points on perfect shooting against Montepaschi Siena. Smith led Haifa to the Last 32 while finishing third in the Eurocup in average performance index rating (21.4 per game). He was also ranked third in steals (1.8 spg.), sixth in rebounds (6.8 rpg.), 10th in assists (4.8 apg.) and 14th in scoring (14.7 ppg.). Smith led the Israeli league in average performance index rating (25.5 per game), was second in assists (6.2 apg.), fifth in scoring (16.1 ppg.) and ninth in rebounding (7.0 rpg.). He helped Haifa reach the Israeli league finals after defeating Jerusalem in the semifinals.
Before finding a home in Israel, Smith had played for a total of 10 teams on five continents. He has suited up for Atlanta in the NBA; Arkansas in the D-League; Lukoil Academic Sofia in Bulgaria; Shanxi Zhongyu and Liaoning Panpan Hunters in China; Melbourne South Dragons in Australia; Gigantes de Carolina, Vaqueros de Bayamon and by Indios de Mayaguez in Puerto Rico; Marinos de Anzoategui in Venezuela; and Fuerza Regia Monterrey in Mexico. He has won national championships in Australia, Bulgaria, Israel, Puerto Rico and Venezuela.
